Jason NAsh gives an end of season round up for the River Bandon…
Another season on the Bandon has drawn to a close. The final week was relatively quiet with low water prevailing but overall, runs this year have been excellent right from early spring.
Spring salmon were caught from March with really good numbers of fish running in April and May. A wetter spring would have seen more caught on rod and line!
Cue June and the run of fish only got better and better. It was a pleasure to see many big fish running and being caught, especially when a decent flood arrived in July and most anglers enjoyed excellent sport. Indeed, at least 2 fish over 20lb were caught and released this season along the river.
August and September will be remembered for persistent low water to the point where members were asked to stop fishing and visitor permits were no longer available. Thank you to all anglers for acknowledging that particularly difficult time and respecting our quarry.
It was great that we got at least one good flood before the season ended and big numbers of fish were caught yet again with most of them returned due to their colour as no backend run of fresh salmon materialised.
As per usual, we would like to take this opportunity to remind all anglers to return their logbooks and unused tags to Inland Fisheries Ireland by October 19th.
Bring on season 2023!
