Stefan Martin reports for the Killybegs Mariners on the 4th round of their winter league…

Blessed with the weather once again for the 4th league outing on Rossnowlagh but arriving at the beach with gentle easterlies and no surf told it was going to be difficult fishing and so it proved.

Huge banks of weed sat on the High tide line but thankfully the water was clean to fish but crabs were out in force attacking the baits under the starry sky above the 18 anglers taking part.

A rampant first hour for Cara Boyle saw him with 6 counting flounder to 33cm with everyone else getting one or two smaller fish and the longer casts finding dogs.
A total of 6 different species were caught including pouting, whiting, dogs, turbot, flounder and coley.

Longest flattie prize of €50 was won by Johnny Byrne with a 32cm flounder.
2nd overall with 192pts flounders and dogs for €50 was won by Pat Cunningham.
And 1st place taking the win for €100 with 198pts with 6 flounders was won by Cara Boyle.

Well done to you all and also a mention for our two new junior anglers out enjoying the fishing its great to see the youth taking an interest in the sport well done to Cormac Duddy and Eoghan Boylan. There will be nights when there are loads of fish going when conditions are better.
