The NCFFI report on the recent youth championships at Daingean, Co. Offaly – 5th July 2025:
A fantastic day was enjoyed on the canal bank in Daingean yesterday as 20 of Ireland’s young anglers took part in the highly anticipated All-Ireland Youth Canal Championships. The event made a welcome return after a number of years and, for the first time, featured a brand-new Under 12 category.
The championship brought together junior anglers from across the country, competing in a fun and friendly environment designed to promote canal angling among youth.
Trophies, medals, and tackle prizes were awarded to the top three in each category. Congratulations to all the framers.

However, the day was about much more than just podium finishes — it was about participation, learning, and enjoying angling together. Every young angler received small tackle gifts and refreshments at the presentation ceremony, creating a celebratory atmosphere for all.
Dean Murray, NCFFI Leinster Rep expressed his delight at the event’s success:
“It’s great to be involved in resurrecting a canal competition specifically for young anglers. I’m delighted with the turnout and the enthusiasm on the bank today. Thank you to everyone who took part and to the parents for supporting their children’s passion for angling.”
The NCFFI extends sincere thanks to Sean Ward and Dean Murray for organising the event, and to Johnny Bailey and Colin Oliver for their invaluable assistance on the canal bank. Thank you to The Blackthorn for use of the function room.
The event was proudly supported by Inland Fisheries Ireland, whose continued backing plays a key role in promoting youth angling across the country.
