Peter Driver of Piscari Fly is back with his weekly roundup of the fishing scene

Almost there…

So next Saturday the 15th of February we see the start of the rivers and Lakes opening up around Ireland, it’s possible to go and drift across the corrib maybe pick up an early season trout. We always had good success around lime island that time of the year heading out of Ballindif. If the weather keeps nice and steady it could be worth a drift somewhere around them rocks. We’ve got some really good early season trout there over the years.

There’s some rivers down south open on the Blackwater system in and around cork and Limerick. We see the first of our rivers open up like the Bride, the Blackwater, the Funchion and the Awbeg and so if conditions stay favorable would be also great to get out on a river and maybe pick up an early season wild brown trout. Tight Lines and we wish everyone a safe and happy season to come as we get into pushing our way into March and look at everything opening up.

North Kildare Anglers Social Evening

Sunday evening saw our usual annual trip to North Kildare up in Sarsfields gaa club in Newbridge. The north Kildare angling club put on a great show again this year for all their members and anyone outside of membership who were more than welcome on the day. Lots of people turned out for a fantastic evening, great display of stands there with finger food also provided. It was a great evening all together thanks so much for everyone coming along and delighted to meet everyone and have a chat. It’s a real benchmark of the season starting as we are getting out of the winter and into the spring when we go to North Kildare and meet everyone and everyone’s excited and picking up their few bits and fly patterns and stuff like that for the common season. So great night had by all and yeah great event thanks for the invite as usual from North Kildare Anglers.

The Pat Denton memorial competition took place in Rathdrum Trout anglers up on their lake in Rathdrum. Fished on a beautiful crisp day, there were plenty of fish caught to keep everyone warm. 1st place went to Barry Enright, 2nd place to Stewart McGrane and in 3rd place Jamie Conway. So congratulations to all the winners. Well done great absolutely to have competitions like these in a small angling club like rathdrum. fantastic little club. Going back to fish points as in the rules. Donal had 33,562 and Marius had 41,660. So Marius was third overall. Brian Conway won the longest fish at 78 cm, well done Brian.

What’s Coming?

While we are prepping for France – Peter and Mark will be heading to The International Artificial Fly Show next week in St Etienne – all Piscari eyes are fixed firmly on the Irish Spring Angling Fair happening down in Ardaire Springs, Mooncoin, Co. Kilkenny on the May bank holiday weekend. A fantastic weekend of angling, fishing, chat, a great social outing. One for all anglers, young and old, new or experienced – come along for the weekend it’s so important to support the likes of these shows or they just won’t continue so if you have any plans for the May bank holiday weekend you want to get your kids in fishing, this is the place to be come down one or two days, kids go free. Lots of activity, lots of great demonstrators and speakers over the weekend and people that know their stuff and you can pop along and ask questions while sampling and testing out a bit of gear.
