The charter skippers based in the south Clare area are lucky to have the relative shelter of the Shannon Estuary on their doorsteps. So, when the wind gets up (and it seems to have been more or less continuously up for the last few weeks), they can get out on the water while many other charter boats have to stay ashore.

Luke Aston of Carrigaholt Sea Angling has been spending a lot of time in the estuary in recent weeks, and this week his anglers grabbed some shelter behind Horse Island, where they were able to drift out over a bit of clean ground and picked up a tope or two.

In a similar vein, anglers fishing with Sean Maguire Fishing Adventures Ireland were able to find some sheltered reefs where pollock proved plentiful enough, and a few other species kept things interesting.
