Peter Driver of Piscari Fly is back with his weekly roundup of the fishing scene
France 24th Salon International Artificial Fly Exhibition

Didn’t get back from France in time last night to get the newsletter done so we said we would get it out to you a day later. The lads were out in St Etienne at the 24th Salon International Artificial Fly Exhibition. They had a great weekend in St Etienne. They flew into Lyon and drove down about an hour out of Lyon. Setting up the stand on the Friday evening and met some of the local anglers, tyers and traders. The next morning the show started at 8 for the boys just to get the stand set up and then the doors opened at 9am and the show went on until 7.30pm.
A long day. Massive crowds and a great response to the stand and our fly tying that we were demonstrating for the 2 days. Great to meet so many people at the stand over the 2 days and talk about fly fishing and fly tying here in Ireland.
Huge thanks to the hosts, Forez-Velay Sport Fishing Club, for putting on a great show. It was a great weekend and we got some amazing feedback from people and we’re looking forward to meeting some of these people on the water this year in Ireland. Thanks so much to Inland Fisheries for inviting us along to help put Ireland in the spotlight at this wonderful exhibition in France. They choose a different country to promote every year and this year Ireland took centre stage. Hopefully we will see some new visitors to the country this year who will come and sample the fishing we have to offer here.
How’s The Fishing?
The fishable waters that we did have didn’t last too long. The rains over the weekend pretty much destroying all the Southern rivers bringing them up into heavy waters so fishing at the moment is at a bit of a standstill. A few lads got out last week though before the rains came.

Lukasz Ryz got out down there in Munster on some of the rivers that are open. He was fishing his Piscari-Fly Venator and got a nice bit of action. Hopefully the rivers will drop back soon and we will see lots more action coming our way. Lots more fisheries opening up now on March 1st, this weekend, as lots more rivers and lakes are starting their season, until we get near St Patrick’s Day where everything will be open. So anyone heading out on the 1st of March, the very best of luck, tight lines and stay safe on the water.
All-Ireland Banks Championship
The TAFI 2024 Senior Bank Interprovincial Championships were fished at Ardaire Springs in Mooncoin Co Kilkenny. There were 23 anglers in total competing for the championship with Sean Dempsey retaining his 1st place position. The weather conditions for the morning session were absolutely ideal and the lake fished really well. The afternoon session proved to be more challenging as the lake became very calm with a high sun and no wind.
Congratulations to all the winners. 1st Place Sean Dempsey, 2nd Place Gary Crothers and 3rd Place Mikey Foley. Longest fish went to Mikey also at 76cm. And Team Ulster came out on top of the provinces.
AGM Season
AGM Season is still on. Again it is important to get out and support organisations and clubs that do the work and lobby for better waters and stuff like that.

Thomastown AGM is happening in The Salmon Pool at 7.30pm on Monday 10th March.β
