Fishery manager Nigel Rush reports on another week of broken records at the Kylemore Abbey Fishery
Week ending 3rd August saw the fishery breaking another record. The first week of July gave us a record 32 fish and this week past has surpassed this by five fish with 37 fish landed for just 27 rod days.
Heavy rains on the 24th July gave us the necessary lift in water levels to allow more fish to enter the system and this combined with some excellent anglers booked into the fishing rota for the weekend we ended up with yet another record week.
Topping the leader board for the week were Peter Zephras from Scotland who landed four fish to 4.5lb for one evenings angling on the lower river and Neil Spellacy four fish to 6lb for one day. Colin Lynham three fish to 5.8lb for one day. New to the fishery, Mark Helmore and Brian Hegarty two apiece for one half day each. Johnathan Murray and Richard McDowell , five fish to 6lb between them and John McCaughey, Dundalk two fish to 4lb for his first visit.
Out of the 37 fish 25 were released 12 killed two of which were fin-clipped hatchery fish.
Sea Trout anglers are slowly starting to appear and for four lake days 19 Sea Trout were recorded.
Water levels still remain good and should do for the next couple of days…but not much rain in sight for the next while. We are now standing at 127 fish and in 2012 we had to wait until 23rd September to achieve this tally!

Hidden away between the mountains of Connemara and the Atlantic ocean, the Kylemore Abbey fishery is a wild and beautiful place. Kylemore Abbey Fishery consists of the Kylemore Middle and Castle lakes, with five and a half miles of the Dawros river which enters the sea in Ballynakill bay. Salmon and sea-trout run for a good proportion of the year to provide first class fishing on uncrowded waters.
The open panoramas of the lakes contrast with the intimacy of the river to give a variety of fishing combined with stunning scenery unrivalled anywhere in Ireland. Although offering an excellent chance of a fish for most of the season, you will find the real meaning of “a fish is a bonus” at Kylemore.
