Saltwater fly fishing Guide
Why not try fishing from the first licensed saltwater fly-fishing boat in Ireland in the second largest natural harbour in the world? Your guide, Commander Richie Ryan Retd. , has built up a huge knowledge of bass fishing, over the last 30 years.
SeaHawk
Fastnet 17′
Skipper: Richie Ryan
Licence: 1413
Base: Cobh Operational area: Cork Harbour
Notes: With a purpose built boat he is insured to carry up to 3 anglers. Bass and pollock on the fly are the main target species.
Young and old are welcome and if you have no knowledge of fly-fishing, other methods are available. Richie has been responsible for a vast number of clients catching that elusive first ever bass.
Notes
Alex Gurnee has over 20 years experience boating and fishing in Cork. Alex doesn’t do “slow days”. If it’s not working, he’ll try something else or keep moving. He believe there’s great fishing to be found somewhere at all times – you just have to find it.
Fishing with Old Head Charters
- Inshore Sea Bass specialist: Bass fishing in Ireland is a shallow water pursuit. The average depth I fish in is about 10 feet, over rough ground. These areas are inaccessible to all other Irish charter boats.
- Private Charters Only: selling individual passenger tickets is a common practice on other boats. Unfortunately, it means you don’t have a choice of who you fish with or what you fish for. When you step aboard Vibes Ahoy, you have exclusive hire of the vessel.
- Multiple Departure Points: I fish out of four different harbours along the South coast of Ireland, depending on the conditions and time of year. This flexibility means we find more fish and cancel less trips.
Tackle
Alex provides spinning, conventional, and fly-fishing equipment for all his guests – at no additional cost.
The boat
Your vessel for the day is Vibes Ahoy, a 19ft Boston Whaler, fitted with a brand new Suzuki 140 outboard. She does it all – from running 20 miles offshore at high speed, to quietly drifting sandy flats in two feet of water. Her large bow platform is perfect for fly fishing, and she’s equipped with a ladder for summer swims.
