There’s no better way to spend the weekend than enjoying the lovely Cork coastline fishing at Clonakilty. Dariusz Kaminski and his two sons Oliwier and Mikolaj did just that.
The two Kaminski boys enjoy the fishing…
Dariusz tells us that the weather was not too good on Sunday morning fishing for Bass, but that didn’t matter because any day you get to go fishing is a good day !. They caught two nice bass and few bits. But the number of bass in Clonakilty bay is going down, every time less fish. He used the same technic fishing; sand eel and mackerel hooks and they are doing a good job. And a lovely time with family.

Chances of landing a big one increasing, Leitrim Observer
It is mid August and the nights are noticeably drawing in, leaves beginning to turn and most evenings now require the wearing of a geansai for those of us out on the lake or by the riverside of an evening. Fish are becoming active again after sulking through the higher water temperatures of the summer and the autumn spawners stirring with the urge to perpetuate themselves are beginning to leave their deep-water domains and make their way up rivers and streams to their spawning beds. In general, the chance of taking large fish improves as the season advances… Leitrim Observer, 21/08/16. Read the full article ‘Chances of landing a big one increasing‘.

The Telephone and Raymond Variant fly patterns proved the winning combination in last Sunday’s Partry Angling Club Pairs competition for Peter Roache from Ballina and John Warren from Crossmolina. “We fished the Gortmore shore area, never moving more than 200 metres, in and out all day. When we realised with the telephone fly that yellow was the colour fish were on, we added a Raymond and went on to catch our quota of four trout each,” Roache said… Irish Times, 22/08/16. Young anglers from Boyne Valley enjoy fishing trip at Courtlough Trout Fishery Balbriggan
Inland Fisheries Ireland hosts youth angling trip as part of Dublin Angling Initiative
Members of the Boyne Valley Fishing Hub enjoyed a fishing trip to Courtlough Trout Fishery on Sunday, 7th of August. Almost 30 people took part in the event with experienced and novice anglers giving and attending lessons on fly fishing. The event, which was sponsored by Inland Fisheries Ireland, the Boyne Valley Fishing Hub and Courtlough Trout Fisheries Balbriggan, was aimed at engaging potential young anglers in the Boyne Valley Area.
Conditions on the day were difficult however all anglers had success catching at least one fish each at the rainbow trout fishery which consists of four acres of spring fed lakes. Topics covered during the fly fishing lessons included fly fishing set ups, fly choice and casting. Prizes were awarded at the end of the event to those who were particularly lucky on the day.
The event was facilitated as part of Inland Fisheries Ireland’s Dublin Angling Initiative which aims to promote, develop and improve angling in the greater Dublin area. During the summer months, young people from national and secondary schools, summer projects and youth services are taken out on fishing courses. To date, thousands of young people have been introduced to sea, coarse and game angling and the initiative has been a catalyst in setting up fishing clubs for many of these young people.

Oisin Cahill, Coordinator of the Dublin Angling Initiative at Inland Fisheries Ireland said: “It was fantastic to see so many anglers of different ages from Boyne Valley Fishing Hub take part in this trip. The Dublin Angling Initiative offers young people an opportunity to try out angling as a pursuit. Angling can be enjoyed at any age or ability and we are always welcoming young people who might be interested to consider trying it out.
The Dublin Angling Initiative also engages young people around important issues such as conservation and the protection of our natural resources, which includes our fisheries. We hope this learning around biodiversity protection is something that will stay with them for the rest of their lives. We need to start engaging communities on these issues and getting the public out there to see what it is all about is a vital first step.”
The Dublin Angling Initiative welcomes enquiries from all groups or individuals interested in its programmes and services. For further information, visit www.fisheriesireland.ie or contact Oisin Cahill, Dublin Angling Initiative Co-Coordinator by emailing oisin.cahill@fisheriesireland.ie .
The Boyne Valley Fishing Hub is made up of clubs along the River Boyne including Navan, Trim and Bective with a focus on developing youth angling. David Edwards, skipper of charter boat Tigger reports from a wet and blustery Cork today:
The weather has once again led to a number of cancellations but when it is good enough to get offshore, the sharks are turning up in big numbers. Average size is a little down on previous seasons but numbers are significantly up with several trips producing a first fish within 10 minutes of starting our drift. Wednesday saw anglers from Florida getting amongst the Blues and Jacob Larson not only smashed his shark PB with a 2 meter Blue but also landed a Porbeagle which is a first for Tigger. Porbeagles were around in numbers off the West Cork coast some years back but commercial pressure saw them disappear, so it was very satisfying to see this fish swim away after a quick photo.

Inshore fishing has been improving with larger cod and ling now showing on most trips. Plenty of smaller species are around and mackerel seem to have settled down again and we are having no problems getting enough for bait and a good feed afterwards.
Ling up to 20lb are being caught inshore on some of the smaller tides with several good fish being lost due to light traces being used when targeting other species. September and October usually throws up the biggest fish inshore and offshore so lets all hope for some good settled spells.

Tigger is a purpose built Procharter 31 angling boat, powered by a 330HP diesel engine and equipped with all necessary safety equipment. Reef and ground drift fishing is generally the most productive method with the potential to catch in excess of 20 species if you adapt your lures and baits accordingly. From mid June through to October it’s usually possible to target the blue shark fishing that is predominatly between 10-15 miles off the estuary. All sharks are released and recent seasons have seen larger species such as mako and threshers being sighted more frequently. Web:www.irelandseaangling.com
John Belger with Flounder at Rosslare Small Fishing Festival
Garmin, global leader of satellite navigation, has announced its support as a key sponsor for this year’s Rosslare Small Boats Festival, one of the most prestigious small boat fishing festivals in Europe which runs from 10 to 17 September, across the south east coast of Ireland.
John Belger with Flounder at Rosslare Small Fishing Festival
This festival started in 1985 with just five boats fishing and has gone from strength to strength with 45 boats participating this year. The quality of the fishing and variety of species available has helped attract a very high standard of competitor with 138 anglers travelling from all over the UK and Ireland.
Chair of the organising committee, John Belger who has been involved with the event for 26 years is delighted to have sponsorship from such a major player in this arena. He said,
“Garmin products are very popular with small boat fishing enthusiasts so it is a real coup for us to have such a well-respected brand on board. Their portfolio includes some of the industry’s most sophisticated chartplotters, touchscreen multifunction displays and sonar technology. Their high-definition radar, autopilots, high-resolution mapping, sailing instrumentation, and other products and services are known for innovation, reliability, and ease-of-use. I have used Garmin chartplotters and sonar for many years and can personally vouch for their quality and reliability. I’ve no doubt they will be highly sought after by all the teams taking part.
“We are also extremely proud of our association with our other sporting sponsors, DAIWA Sports, as well as Inland Fisheries Ireland, Fáilte Ireland, Wexford Council and IPB Insurance.
“The contribution and commitment of all sponsors enables the Committee of fellow anglers to deliver a hugely enjoyable Festival in a professional manner,” said John.
Gail Cook, Director of Marketing Communications for Garmin UK and Ireland is delighted to be involved with the Rosslare Small Boat Fishing Festival, which is steadily growing and has so many competitors coming back year after year.
“At Garmin we think it is really important to support events like this that celebrate anglers love of small boat fishing. Whilst the competition was fierce last year with boats recording up to 38 different species of fish being caught during the competition, the educational benefits with regards to practising catch and release for marine species are hugely beneficial in terms of conservation and creating public awareness of our sea fisheries resource.
“I’ve no doubt the top three winners of this year’s event will put the new Garmin echoMAP CHIRP, Panoptix and Striker 5dv equipment to great use, helping them achieve the clearest scanning sonar of fish and structure on the market,” said Gail.
As well as having a significant presence during the festival, Garmin will be offering competitors and festival goers the opportunity to see some of the new product lines they have in their marine range including the chance to purchase many other products across their wellness, fitness and outdoor ranges.
