Another quiet week on Currane, though rain may improve fishing

Mattis Hopert takes all the limelight on Lough Currane
Mattis Hopert takes all the limelight on Lough Currane

Guide Vincent Appleby reports from Lough Currane where it has been slow going for salmon and sea trout anglers…

27/7/16 I was speaking to the Commander-in-chief of Waterville Boats, Mr. Michael O’Sullivan who reported that Dublin angler Mr. Andrew Brown caught a fine Grilse and finished his day off in his hired out boat from Waterville Boats, watervilleboats@gmail.com, with a fine Sea trout. All caught on the fly. Wind W and light with reasonable cloud cover.

28/7/16 Straight to the Sea Trout department. Cork angler Mr. Patrick O’Connor caught two Trout on the drift while fishing with is Gillie Mr. Neil O’Shea of www.oshealoughcurrane.com. For the rest of the angling community their performances have a lot to be desired in all departments ie choice of fly, or fly line selection and in the telecommunications department. Wind variable NNW with good cloud cover and very humid with showers.

29/7/16 12 year old  German Angler, Master Mattis Hopert takes all the limelight on Lough Currane today and for good reason. He caught a nice 4 lbs. grilse on the troll while fishing with his Gillie Mr. Neil O’Shea of www.oshealoughcurrane.com. It’s great to see young anglers taking centre stage. Wind E light with reasonable cloud cover at times and very warm.

30/7/16 Lough Currane was the quiet side in all departments. Wind NE light with bright sunshine.

31/7/16 My Noble Anglers failed in all departments again. Wind W light to fresh with reasonable cloud cover.

1/8/16  Big flood takes the headlines this first day of August as the Anglers looked up to the heavens as rain poured down from the heavens as my Noble Anglers failed miserably in all departments. Wind SE then veered SW.

2/8/16 The majority of anglers headed for the Waterville Fishery River systems this morning and going by one of my spies, the Inny was like Piccadilly this morning with anglers heading upstream. Come evening my iphone was like the silence of the lambs but you can be dam sure some of my noble Anglers had their mint sauce and if they didn’t procure they ought to be ashamed of themselves. Now we head across the Valley to Lough Currane and all was silent in all departments which is not surprising with 31.8 mm of rainfall. Wind SW fresh and overcast with mist rain.

That is your ration from the last week on Lough Currane, from your Gillie and the Waterville Fishery, no spin no fly’s just facts.

Canal in Rathangan closed for repairs after culvert collapse, Leinster Leader

Major repairs on the Grand Canal near Rathangan are expected to takes months to complete, after a three-mile stretch of water poured out through a collapsed culvert some two weeks ago. Waterways Ireland have built a temporary dam at the site of the breech to contain the remaining water half way between Rathangan and Glenaree. The canal is at one of its lowest levels ever, and has been closed to boats…

July was a slow for salmon anglers at Delphi

Delphi salmon

David McEvoy reports from Delphi where it is hoped August will see catches improve:

Salmon catches this July will certainly not break any records here in Delphi. Despite fairly good water throughout the month with 152.4mms (6 inches) of rainfall spread fairly evenly throughout; our returns were below average, with only twenty nine fish landed for the month.

Fishing for the last 2 weeks of July was as follows…

In Week 29 there were four landed, including three by Mike Shortt, two in the Bridge Pool and one in the Meadow, two of which were on a Cascade and one on a beaded nymph. Christopher Jarman also had one from the Quarry Pool on a Red Frances of 4lbs2ozs.

There were six landed in week 30. Christopher Jarman had two, one from Morrisons on a Stoats Tail and one from the Whin of 5lbs2ozs on a Willie Gunn. Bruno Janssens from Belgium landed two including his first ever, a fish of 4lbs5ozs from the Turn Pool on a Mini Tube and another of 2lbs15ozs from the Quarry on a Cascade. Gareth Norris and George Westropp also had one each from Boat Point on Fin and the Quarry Pool respectively.

Gareth Beattie managed to land a cracking fish of 13lbs2ozs on the last day of the month from the Turn Pool on a Willie Gunn.

Sea trout started brightly with some nice fish being caught and all in excellent condition. Once they settle a bit in the lakes and the Daddy’s start to appear I would expect to see more activity. In total we had seventy five sea trout up to 2.5lbs.

The salmon fishing has been disappointing, but I would still be hopeful that we will see some improvement in the salmon fishing in the next couple of weeks. D.McEvoy

International group writes Irish flyfishing history by catching nine blue sharks

Christin with the biggest of her three shark

Dutch angling journalist Rudy van Duijnhoven was in touch to let us know about a historic catch that wins charter boat Loch an Iasc Catch of the Week…

A group of flyfishers from Germany, The Netherlands and Ireland made excellent use of the calm weather last weekend by landing nine blue sharks up to 60 – 65 lb on the fly in two days. Fishing on board of Tom Collins’ boat Loch an Isac, which sails from the Reen Pier near Union Hall, the Saturday was a hectic day with numerous sharks hooked and lost due to the hook coming out or leader breakage, even one rod broke in the process.

Tom Collins did a great job in working the rubby dubby to get the sharks close to the boat and the first blue shark that was hooked, took the fly in full view of everyone on the boat. Dutch freelance photographer and writer Rudy van Duijnhoven fought the fish for 25 minutes on a #12 weight outfit before Tom was able to net the fish and a load roar was heard on board. This fish had an estimated weight of 60 to 65 lb and was returned after taking out the barbless (!) fly and making pictures on board.

Rudy also landed the second fish that day, this one was a bit smaller, but with its 40 lb still a lot larger than what most flyfishers will ever land on a flyrod. German lady flyfisher Christin Breuker fought a large shark right to the boat, Tom touched the leader, so technically speaking it was caught. It dived once more after that and than the connection between flyline and leader gave way…

The second day the group came better prepared and after a slow start all hell broke loose. IFI staff Markus Müller and Shane O’Reilly each landed a shark on fly, as did German flyfisher Mario Sanz and Dutch flyfisher Rudy van Duijnhoven. Christin Breuker even landed three this day!! Most likely she is the first female flyfisher to land blue shark on the fly in Ireland. Another five shark were hooked and lost this second day.

All fish were hooked when stripping the fly, often even within sight of the people on board. There was never ever the need to fake by adding juices to the fly or putting a piece of mackerel flesh on the hook. The shark took the streamers of 20 to 25 cm in length like there was no tomorrow.

The Loch an Iasc is a fast worker 36 built in Valentia and refurbished in 2005 under department of marine supervision specifically for angling charters and whale watching. She is licenced and insured for 12 passengers and carries a P5 licence which allows her to operate within 30 miles of designated ports. For customer comfort there is inside seating for 12 passengers and it has a toilet as well. The Loch an Iasc is powered by two Caterpillar 3126 engines giving a total of 700 horsepower which means that our customers can get to fishing grounds faster or when the whales and dolphins are offshore you will get more time with them. In 2014 Tom Collins invested in new electronics and fitted new led lighting for night shark fishing trips. Tom has found in the past that lots of light at night attracts baitfish which in turn brings in the big predators. For information on trip from the Reen Pier in Union Hall, County Cork, contact Tom Collins at +353 (0)87 – 279 2983.

Success for French Pike Anglers Despite Challenging Conditions

Aisha and Alexander Pike Fishing in the North East Last Week With Peter Cunningham

Angling guide Peter Cunningham has been in touch recently to let us know about the pike fishing in the north east. Aisha and Alexander from France spent last Thursday pike fishing with Peter in the north east. Peter described the fishing as hard with heavy showers and at times a stiff south to south-easterly breeze. Peter says that despite the difficult and challenging conditions we stuck at it and managed 6 pike for the day, the best fish measured in at 82cm. In between the pike and showers we had a dozen perch on small lures and an enjoyable day was had by all!

The 1st Meath Adventure Scouts from Dunboyne and Sphere 17 youthgroup from Darndale, Dublin recently participated in a visit on board the Irish Naval Ship LE Ciara. During a short break in Dublin port to refuel on July 25th, the Commanding Officer of LE Ciara gave kind permission for a visit to the ship which was facilitated by the Dublin Angling Initiative of Inland Fisheries Ireland.

Groups from 1st Meath Adventure Scouts and Darndale’s Sphere 17 were given a comprehensive tour of the ship which included talks on Naval duties, life at sea, navigation and weapon systems, fisheries protection and Naval recruitment opportunities. A key component of the Dublin Angling Initiative is to highlight the importance of fisheries conservation and visits aboard Irish Naval ships are an exciting extension of this subject.

Oisin Cahill, Coordinator of the Dublin Angling Initiative at Inland Fisheries Ireland said: “We are delighted to work with the young people and youth leaders from 1st Meath Adventure Scouts and Sphere 17 Darndale.  It is great to see the youth groups engage on the issue of conservation through enjoyable and interesting experiences such as this one.

The Dublin Angling Initiative also introduces youths to the pursuit of angling. Angling is a wide and varied pursuit which can be sedentary or active, practiced socially or in solitude and appeals to a wide range of people of all ages including young people. We hope that by introducing these young people to angling, it might spark their interest and lead to them pursuing it as a hobby. It is vital that we engage communities around the aquatic landscape and encourage interest in important issues such as conservation and the environment.”

Inland Fisheries Ireland’s Dublin Angling Initiative aims to promote, develop and improve angling in the greater Dublin area. During the summer months, young people from national and secondary schools, summer projects and youth services are taken out on fishing courses. To date, thousands of young people have been introduced to sea, coarse and game angling and the initiative has been a catalyst in setting up fishing clubs for many of these young people.

The Dublin Angling Initiative welcomes enquiries from all groups or individuals interested in its programmes and services. For further information, visit www.fisheriesireland.ie or contact Oisin Cahill, Dublin Angling Initiative Co-Coordinator by emailing oisin.cahill@fisheriesireland.ie .
