Lindsey Clarke reports from LOUGH MELVIN – Monday 11th to Sunday 17th July 2016.
Lough Melvin trout fishing remained variable with some rods happy for their days fishing and others reporting the going to be hard. Highlight of the week however were two fine Ferox caught on the fly on Friday. Bill McNeary landed a fine 10¾lb trout caught on a Gosling fly from Rossinver Bay in the Rossinver Fishery and Sean Carty landed a fine 32 inch Ferox caught on a fly from the Sunken Island which was sportingly released again. The fish was estimated to weigh between 12 & 13lb!

A good blue shark on the Kiwi Girl out of Mullaghmore
Donegal Bay is fishing well with boats at Mullaghmore and elsewhere landing big blue sharks even when the conditions are less than ideal.

Shore anglers are also getting some good fishing. The early part of this week saw some glorious weather and as the temperatures soared the Killbegs Mariners made the angling version of hay while the sun shined.
Spotted ray
Just 3 hours on the sand produced 18 dabs with 10 of them over 30cm as well as spotted rays, turbot, dogs and pollack.
Wrasse on a jelly worm
On Tuesday evening some of the guys from the club were out again. By the time they were fishing the weather pages were reporting offshore lightening moving their way and they figured the pollack may be scarce.
Other soft plastics also worked
So they ended up having a great session of wrasse on the soft plastics. Violent takes and arched over lure rods as the thunder rolled out the bay, hard to beat it!
At the other end of Donegal at Downings, skipper Michael McVeigh tells us that the charter boat fishing remains good – although the mackerel are still a bit patchy.

Lough Lene Anglers hosted the Larry Mulligan Cup last Friday night and there was huge turn out of fifty eight anglers lashing flies out across Lene. On the night Aidan Heffernan had a cracking trout of 2.36kg, 2nd place went two Noel Shield with another fine fish of 2.00kg and 3rd was Darren Whitehead with 1.98kg.
Lene winner Aidan Heffernan received the Larry Mulligan Cup from Barry Mulligan son of the late Larry
The top junior angler was Macauley Fox with a lovely trout of 1.34kg. Presentation took place at Fagan’s Point and Barry Mulligan son of the late Larry presented Aidan with the Larry Mulligan Cup. The next trout competition on Lene is the Mick Healy Cup, and this evening competition will be fished on August 5th. More on this in the coming weeks.
Mark Grace and his pike
Pleasure anglers are also enjoying good fishing on Lene and recently Stan Ryan and pal Justin Gordon rattled the nets with super rainbow trout on the troll. Stan had a very unusual looking lure, and the Lene trout certainly took a shine to it. There is also a few nice pike being caught on Lene and Mark Grace was in the thick of the action with Barry Gordon.

John Dooner with the winning Ennell pike of 15lbs.
Guide Michael Flanagan reports on a good day out on Lough Ennell:
Recently Lough Ennell anglers hosted their annual family day out and it proved quite successful, with plenty of pike being caught. On the day Mullingar angler John Dooner rattled the scales with a good pike of 15lbs to take Top Rod. John Dooner with the winning Ennell pike of 15lbs.
I was on Ennell last weekend, but just could not get a handle on the pike that day but I’m hoping in the coming weeks a few good pike will take the bait. On the trout scene on Ennell the Jimmy Nea Cup pencilled in for Friday 22nd July, has being put back a week and will be fished on Friday 29th. This evening trout fly fishing competition will be fished from 7pm -11pm, with presentation in Whitebridge Bay. Michael Flanagan Midland Angling

Michael Flanagan had a few hours trolling last week with his pal Frank McKeown in the Midlands and they had some success on Savage Gear 3D Line Thru lures. The fire tiger colour was belted a number of times, and Mick also had a cracking fish on a Line Thru Lure. It was one of the best days weather wise on the waterways and they got a few colourful pics of their hard fighting summer pike.

James Kelly, Mark Elders and Daniel O’Kelly had some great shark fishing early this week at Kinsale, fishing aboard the Silver Dawn. Mike Dennehy and James Walsh put in a lot of effort to make sure it was a good day and 9 sharks were brought to the boat by the 3 anglers.
Daniel O’Kelly with his 111lb blue shark
Daniel had biggest blue at 111lb, his biggest fish ever. The weight was worked out using one of the standard formula for weighing sharks: (Girth x Girth x Length)/800
Measured at a length of 184cm, which is 72.44in and with a girth of 35in you get 110.92lbs.
Silver Dawn is based at Trident Hotel in beautiful and historic town of Kinsale, Cork, Ireland. Our coastal area benefits from a range of mixed grounds with mud, shingle, rock and sand banks all with in reach to offer some excellent and varied fishing.
Saturday was dull but we had found that were some fine pollack going and over the weekend we had no toruble finding bait with mackerel all over the place.
Stone bass, a regular summer visitor to Irish waters
Our anglers enjoyed more than just the glorious weather at the start of the week. We also had seriously good fishing with blue sharks, hake and and specimen whiting amongst the catches on Monday. On Tuesday the fishing was superb with plenty blue sharks, near specimen haddock, more good whiting whiting, hake again and even stone bass.

Kevin Murphy from Bellavista reports on the fishing out of Cobh where small boat anglers are enjoying some excellent fishing…
Bellavista Angling Services had a group of anglers fish with them who only used soft plastics. Over the course of a week they landed 24 Bass and plenty of Pollack.
One 24 bass caught on soft plastics by German anglers fishing with Bellavista
Bellavista Angling Services had another German group of anglers staying with the during the past week, from Andrees Angelreisen. The weather wasn’t great early in the week preventing them from getting to the outside marks but once it cleared up and they got out the fishing was great on the reefs. Plenty of Conger, Bass, Pollock and Cod. There are even some nice Sharks about at the moment.

When Kevin is looking after his guests he fits in a bit of fishing. On Tuesday, 19 July, he watched Jim Clohessy get some fine bass including one of 65cm. Apart from bass, Jim has also been getting a few blue sharks outside Cork Harbour from his own small boat.
A lovely 65cm bass for Jim.
