The Lakelands and Inland Waterways World Pairs Angling Championships, Ireland’s most prestigious coarse angling event takes place in three weeks’ time from September 6 with over 100 entries already registered. The event attracts anglers worldwide to undertake the challenge of catching natural wild fish that are so prolific in Ireland’s Lakelands, with the added difficulty of doing so in partnership. The National Parks and Wildlife Service of the Department of Arts, Heritage and the Gaeltacht and Inland Fisheries Ireland are investigating the cause of death of large numbers of dead freshwater crayfish, which have been found in the Bruskey/Erne River at Killydoon, near Ballinagh Co Cavan. The kill affected White-clawed CrayfishAustropotamobius pallipes along a short stretch of the Bruskey River where over 600 dead crayfish were found. IN THE sporadic appearances of summer last week, anglers and their boats went to sea, and even the ocean sunfish were basking, writes Donal Hickey. Ireland has a new world cup trout fly angling champion. David Corcoran from Kilconly, Tuam, Co Galway, took the coveted title with a convincing win following a protracted five-day championship fishing out from Cushlough Bay on Lough Mask in Co Mayo. Now in its 59th year, the world cup has withstood the test of time and is regarded as the premier fly angling event in the northern hemisphere, and is often referred to as the “Rolls-Royce” of wild brown fishing competitions… Irish Times, 24/08/15. The search for a Chinese fisherman swept off the rocks at Kerryhead is continuing. The man, a tourist aged in his fifties was fishing with a friend on Friday afternoon when a rogue wave swept him from the rocks and into the sea. The man was rod and line fishing on rocks with a colleague at a point about 30ft above the sea surface when, it is understood, a large swell pulled him off the rocks… Irish Independent, 22/08/15. Drogheda Coarse Angling Club reports on the round 6 results of their league which took place over the weekend on Lough Namachree, Co Monaghan. There were some nice catches with only a few grams separating the top two anglers. The final match will take place on 6th September.

Rain. What Rain! Kevin Enjoys His Fishing in the Rain on the River Boyne
Kevin Peronneau from France visited the north east over the weekend to try his hand at some bass fishing with angling guide Peter Cunningham. Unfortunately, the chocolate coloured water, strong winds and rain made fishing very tough indeed. After trying a number of locations on the Louth coastline on Saturday without success it was decided after discussion with Peter to have a try for a salmon on the Boyne the following day Sunday 23rd August.
The weather forecast for Sunday was bad with a weather warning having been issued for persistent heavy rain. Undeterred by the conditions, Kevin and Peter set out at 7.30 am to try a number of locations on the lower Boyne. Kevin had never salmon fished before but after some tips from Peter he was fishing like he had salmon fished for years. There were one or two fresh fish about but no fish had been hooked up till lunchtime. A change of location after lunch brought a change in fortunes with Kevin finally hooking into a mad fresh 10 lb salmon that thought it was a sailfish. According to Peter, the fish spent more time in the air than in the water. After about 6 or 7 frenetic jumps the fish finally threw the single barbless hook to win its freedom much to the disappointment of Kevin and Peter. One more fish was missed during the session but Kevin was more than happy to have achieved a hook up on his first outing salmon fishing.

Mark and Laura Herraty enjoyed some good tench fishing recently at the hot water stretch in Lanesborough. Night tench fishing is very popular and rewarding just below the bridge on the Longford side this time of year.
Anglers have reported large quantities of small pike being caught on Lough Ree over the past 3 weeks, with the eastern side of the lake fishing particularly well.
However seasoned angler, Padraig Corcoran from Lough Ree Boat Hire, Lecarrow had 2 excellent pike trolling on the western side of Lough Ree recently. The pike measured 99cm and 110cm. Padraig has lake boats for hire in Lecarrow, just north of Athlone.
