Low levels and few rods on the Drowes

RIVER DROWES – Monday 8th to Sunday 14th September 2014

The Drowes remained at very low summer levels this week and there were few rods on the fishery. One French group of 4 rods that were booked in to the fishery seemed to be the only anglers fishing. They recorded 4 salmon caught for the week with the best of these weighing 14lb.

O'Malley cup on Lough Ennell next Sunday 21st Sept

I was out on Ennell last week, and quite a few fish are showing across the Lake.  Its not that they are taking the few Olives or Daddy longlegs that are on the surface, they are pitching right out of the water as you troll and drift across the lake.  This coming Sunday Lough Ennell Trout Preservation Association will host the O’ Malley Cup, so hopefully the trout will surface feed on the day. It’s an 11am start from Whitebridge Bay, and all boats back in the bay at 7pm. For more on this drop into David O, Malley Tackle Center.

Angling guide and journalist Mick Flanagan reports on Trout fishing in the midlands area:

Lough Owel is drawing anglers from near and far as we drift into Mid September. I believe the Meath Topic has our Angling Focus featured, is drifting around the canteen at Intel in Leixlip.Last weekend Matthias Maas was over from Germany doing some work at Intel, and decided to check out he angling in Westmeath. On the day Matthias caught a few lovely trout on Owel fly-fishing, and done a few hours trolling, which produced huge perch.

Quite a few local anglers were also out over the weekend, and had cracking sport on the fly. This coming Saturday Lough Owel a National qualifier, and many anglers will be Out & About on Owel this week practicing. Last week we covered the Clonhugh Cup but had no room for some of the presentation photographs. All going well a few will appear this week.

Also on Owel were Henk Heiligers and son Stefan are staying with Kevin Lyons of Melview Lodge Longford. The lads are from Hellevoetsluis in the Netherlands, and were on Owel last week.  We did some long drifts out from Portloman and managed a few nice trout on wet fly

Magical doubles from the old reliable silver spoon on Ennell

Dave Egan and cracking Ennell pike.

The Ennell pike have eventually work up from their summer siesta and are latching on big lures trolled by pike anglers. I was out on Ennell last week for a few days, and photographed some super pike. Dave Egan was in the thick of the action and had 5 nice pike with 3 fish hitting the magical double figures. The best two fish fell to the old reliable silver spoon, so never leave home without a few in your tackle box. The pike were in mint condition, and really put our gear to the test. Other lures that worked well were savage eels, and some colorful hard baits.

Bordeaux Bass Anglers Set to Return

Visitors from Bordeaux Enjoying their First Visit to Ireland

Jim Hendrick reports on a group of French bass fishing enthusiasts that visited recently from Bordeaux. The group were surface lure enthusiasts and surrendered all other techniques in favour of their favourite way of taking bass. On the surface! The weather was beautiful but fishing was tough over the period due to the north eastlerly influence. The best fish recorded weighed in at 3.25kgs and after spending a great week with Jim the group are set to return in a couple of years.

I sat in terminal 2 at Dublin airport watching the match whilst awaiting the arrival of my French customers. Always tense moments, an all Ireland final and the anticipation of a weeks guided fishing that lay ahead. This was one of the larger groups that I had guided in the past few years – there was Philippe, Dennis and his wife Solange, and Giles and his wife Agnes. A challenge no doubt!

The balance lay in striking the correct fishing strategy and timing whilst allowing Solange and Agnes time to explore some of the historic sites of south and eastern Ireland. The group was based in a B&B in Wexford town for seven nights and six days but we had flexibility to move and travel as the fishing dictated.

The fishing strategy for the next six days lay as follows –

4 Mornings rising tides fishing 04:30 to 08:30

4 Evenings top/falling tides fishing 20:30 to 24:30

2 midday sessions over mixed tides on different but close locations. Room to plan and manoeuvre as the fishing dictated of course.

The three guys have a surface lure fishing obsession and had told me very early in the planning that even if conditions were tough they would remain fishing on the surface in preference to fishing hard diving lures or soft baits. In fact they arrived with no soft or diving lures such was their passion for surface lure fishing.

"Fish On" A Nice Bass Taken on a Surface Lure Provides Sport for the Lads.
Fish On” A Nice Bass Taken on a Surface Lure Provides Sport for one of the Lads.

The guys had been bass fishing together in France for some 20 years  both from the shore and in a skiff in many different locations, travelling was part of their game. They also had regular experiences of tropical fishing in Bijagos, Guinea Bissau, Panama and Gabon – this was to be their first time in Ireland. Gear was exceptional and front end.

With such a large group, which at times was, travelling all together I had hired a seven-seater vehicle. This facilitated our airport collections and returns, luggage, it provided significant comfort over a weeks travelling, fishing and exploring. A voyage really, for many reasons, and it needed to work from both dimensions – fishing and tourism both for the guys and the girls, it needed constant management. It was demanding from several different aspects that needed to fit.

The weeks weather was to be strongly impacted by, and remained under the influence, of a constant easterly and north easterly airflow that was a consequence of the high pressure system that lay over Ireland and much of the UK. In fact the high pressure extended into a lot of western Europe too. Mild sunny breezy days with calm evenings and mornings, and as any bass fisherman knows, fishing Wexford under extended conditions such as these was in itself a considerable challenge. This can be at times difficult to convey to customers who aren’t ‘tuned’ to local influences.

Bass Success for the Bass Anglers from Bordeaux
Bass Success for the Bass Anglers from Bordeaux

Monday came and went as we travelled into the western sections of the coast and on Tuesday we had the opportunity to travel to Cork and work with a film crew.

A French film crew from SEASONS happened to be in Ireland filming Trout, Salmon and Pike fishing – so why not bass? We ventured down the coast and met the guys, and IFI, its always interesting to have French bass fishing customers filmed in Ireland by a French film company, it adds another layer to the possibilities of promotion.

The girls ventured along the coast on a considerable hike, the boys played with their fish as we were overwhelmed by vast shoals of mackerel chasing sprat and sandeel into every gulley available….and so it went, we voyaged into fantastic places every day, simple but inspiring in their uniqueness and quality. And this became our routine

Having spent time fishing or exploring or both, we stopped for refreshments along the way, this was often the case wherever we went during the week, Wexford, East Cork, Dungarvan, Kilmore quay, Kilmore village, the Hook, Tintern Abbey, Kilkenny City, New Ross, Johnstown Castle – Greenacres, The Yard, The little Yard, Mary Barrys, Pat Shortts, Spice, Mackens, Kehoes of Kilmore, The Lobster Pot, The Thomas Moore, JM Kellys, Kilkenny Design, Kilkenny Castle and gardens, Butterslip, Westgate design, the Bullring Market, Corcorans Menswear…..

It cannot be denied the significant local economic impact that such a group has left behind in the many places and businesses which they visited. Across the entire southern eastern region – all in pursuit of a fish and a further experience that is uniquely Irish, and completely sustainable.

The wonderful coastal environments and scenery experienced every day, the relaxed acceptance and fun, the pace, the peace, the sound of silence not subject to any pressure. And of course the fish, the fish, the magic of the fish persists and persists.

Thank you all for making it an experience for me that I wont forget, for making it easy to be a bass fishing guide in places that are close to my heart.

Challenging but experts on hand to guide you

South East Ireland boasts fantastic angling, scenery, local history and many fine local establishments so you are sure to have an enjoyable experience.  It also boasts some fine experienced guides such as Ger Doran to advise you on weather conditions, reading the signs and ensuring your angling stay in Wexford is one to remember.  Ger was out recently with some staff on Inland Fisheries Ireland promoting Wexford. He reports:

As some of you may know after much planning and preparations I spent all last week working closely with Inland Fisheries Ireland liaising and guiding media personnel to promote the local fishing and all that Wexford as a tourist location can offer.

Wexford and the surrounding areas offer superb fishing for many species of fish with plenty of quality accommodation and local amenities to avail of. Angling in Wexford and indeed throughout Ireland is a very important and valuable resource enjoyed by many from near and far.

Forecast in advance of the trip was far from ideal with ongoing Easterly based winds showing no sign of swinging to the preferred warmer air flow of Southerly or South-West winds. As always in advance of arrival the forecast was explained to the guys and its implications from a fishing point of view was understood.

Splashing waves

Managing realistic expectations from day to day is a difficult thing for a guide to do but when working with such professional anglers who realize the influences and limitations of the fishery and importantly adjust expectations accordingly makes for a positive attitude to begin with.

Bass fishing is not easy especially fishing using only the fly which was our chosen method for most of the week. Using a lure rod you can cover a large volume of water in a short period of time but with the fly your limited to short casts often made challenging because of wind or wave action.

Ger Doran - Caught on cameraWith the huge amounts of bait fish present recently catching fish on the fly was even made more difficult as fish cruised around with full stomachs often following our selected fly’s or gently plucking them being much more selective about there feeding than normal.

Fishing rods of 9 feet in length anything from a #7 – #10 with intermediate and floating weight forward lines we managed to catch some well conditioned fish up to 60cm in length throughout the week but it was a challenge!

Ger Doran - Bass in WexfordWe fished hard all week to produce fish covering many miles in stunning locations with some superb visuals. Overall it seemed small to medium flies tied sparse seemed to receive the most interest but some big flies were fished in one locality to represent bigger bait fish and joey mackerel resulted in a good fish attacking Andy’s superbly tied fly, I will perhaps leave Andy to tell that story from what we appropriately named as ‘Rocky Hollow’…..

Ger Doran - Bass in handAlthough a challenging week it was thoroughly enjoyable meeting many new faces, visiting special places creating memory’s to last a lifetime. Thanks again guys!
