Belgian anglers catch 118 pike to 106cm on Longford fishing trip

Belgium anglers Rudy, Ronny, Marc, Jakke and Gunter were back in Ireland for their annual fishing trip staying once again with Kevin and Jane at Melview Lodge in Longford. The guys had 118 Pike to 106 cm during their six days fishing, not bad considering the weather conditions on some days.

Most fish were caught using lures and others were caught using dead baits and Jerk baits, Kevin added these guys are experienced Pike anglers and know how and where to find the Pike even when the going gets tough.

Young anglers enjoy rainbow trout fishing in the Carton Estate

Carton House fishery report 31st October 2013

Rob Love Fishery Manager at Carton House Estate reports on fishing in the lake fishing last week,

My rather optimistic view last week that the water clarity would improve unfortunately never came to pass and fly fishing for pike on the Rye Lake has proved difficult over the last few days.  With the latest forecast in mind it seems a certainty that the water will remain quite coloured and pike will be hard to tempt to the fly until more normal levels are resumed.  Having said that, when clarity improves again (fingers crossed for a spell of dry weather) fishing should really be superb – hopefully next weeks report will have a more positive outlook on prospects for the following few days.

The Sheet of Water however is fishing very well indeed.  A few anglers were out over the last few days and I must give special mention to two youngsters – Shay Donnelly (aged 14) who was out with his dad Ian last Tuesday and my own daughter Hannah (aged 6) who both had great fun fishing this stretch of water.  Shay was a good young fisherman, proving in difficult windy conditions that distance was no object and turning the line over well, landing 3 or 4 nice rainbows (equalled with a bit of relief by Ian given the banter between the two of them) in a couple of hours fishing before heading for the Rye Lake.

Now while I wouldn’t stretch things so far as to say Hannah can cast a fly beautifully – the two of us were holding the rod as the casts were made, but after a quick demo on a figure of eight retrieve she became quite the little fisherwoman, landing two rainbows in a 20 minute trip to the Sheet of Water on Thursday morning.

The usual rainbow lures in pink, purple or especially olive are working well although Ian Donnelly and Hannah had success on a Woolly Bugger of my own tying (light olive & purple body, dark olive hackle – palmered and lead underbody with a marabou & tinsel tail).  Typical river set ups are ideal as fish are feeding on or close to the surface – especially during the milder hours of early afternoon.

The Sheet of Water is perhaps more suited to the beginner / improving angler and it is far more sheltered than the Rye Lake which helps with anyone brushing up on casting technique.  Please note that fishing on the Sheet of Water is only permitted when with a guide.

A day permit is €50 and a 3 hour permit €35.  Anglers should note that this means they can fish for pike on the Rye Lake and rainbow trout on the Sheet of Water (all fly only) in this timeframe – so if one is not working the other might.

The life of the river through the eye of the camera captured by Jason Nash

Jason Nash of www.savagefishingblogspot.ie takes a look at the river through the lens of a camera and tell the tale with class and style:

So fishing on the river is finished again until next year , but its always good to keep an eye on how its ticking over through the autumn and winter months. I rarely go down to the river these days without my camera and with all the wild life around its great to get a few snaps.

Jason Nash - 2At the start of the month we witnessed a good rise in water levels which was enough to encourage good runs of fish upriver. The first day saw the river extremely dirty, as was expected after such a long dry spell, but from then on salmon and trout migrated in numbers.

Throughout the spring and summer a dearth of sea trout was evident. Towards the end of the season runs were gradually building and last week I witnessed the best shoal all season, with at least 50 plus fresh run sea trout taking a brief rest in a pool. These silver tourists ranged in size from a quarter of a pound up to two pounds.

Before colder temperatures eventually grasp the country by the scruff of the neck I hope to get out and do some more bass fishing. 2 weeks into October and I thought I would have been out by now but I’ve just been too busy. One visit to the sea shore in September at an estuary mark resulted in no success on the bass front but I did manage a fiercely hard fighting 4lb pollack and a surprise turbot which just couldn’t resist my Fiiish Black Minnow!

Inquiry into ‘withholding’ of sea lice report widened, Irish Times

The Office of the Ombudsman is to extend its inquiry into the Irish Government’s response to an EU Commission sea lice investigation. The Ombudsman’s Office is already inquiring into the handling of questions put to the Department of Agriculture by the EU, on the prevalence of sea lice near salmon farms and their impact on wild salmon. The inquiry followed a complaint by Friends of the Irish Environment that a key report from the State body Inland Fisheries Ireland had been withheld by the Department in its response to the EU…

Good example flowing from Limerick river plan, Limerick Post

LIMERICK’S Groody River has been showcased to regional development agencies from eight countries across Europe as a good practice example of environmental and tourism projects. The visit was organised by the Mid-West Regional Authority (MWRA) as part of its ongoing remit as a partner agency in the EU-funded ‘Territories of Rivers Action Plans’ (TRAP) project. The two-year project is aimed at benefiting partner regions through the transfer of good practices in integrated water and landscape management.
