Irish Angling Update 🎣 25 October 2024

The first named storm of the season paid us a visit last weekend. Ashley whacked the west coast in particular with wind and waves, while the rest of the country took a milder lashing. That put paid to fishing for a day or two for all but the hardiest (or daftest) of anglers, until things had settled back to normal.

Before the storms came, we did get some fishing in last week, and no better place to start than Crosshaven in Cork, where Team Ireland ground it out to finish with the highest scoring individual angler and secure the team silver medal position at the 59th World Boat Championships. Liam O’Callaghan was the highest scoring angler across the three competition days and, pending an appeal around a FIPs-M scoring systems error, should be crowned world champion and outright individual gold medalist – what an achievement for him! Liam and the Irish team win our Catch of the Week for this week.

Some other Irish teams are preparing for a tilt at a FIPS-M world championship medal in the coming weeks. First up are the Irish Kayak Angling Team who are competing in the inaugural World Championship Kayak Fishing in Valencia, Spain from October 16th to 31st – good luck to them! The following week, the Irish U16 and U21 Shore Angling Teams take on the rest of the world at the FIPS-M World Shore Championships which will be held on beaches in Wexford – we look forward to bringing you all the news from that one.

Competitors at the World Boat Championships

Corrane Sea Angling Club hosted the Connacht Closed Gold Medal recently, with three sessions fished on venues on Achill Island and Mulranny. Kevin Barber, with a second place finish on the Sunday session to add to second and third on Saturday, won the Closed Gold Medal by a single point.

In club news, the West Cork and District SAC moved venue to Ferrypoint for their latest fixture. Youghal beach was the original venue but with the forecast for high winds and big spring tides, it would have been very uncomfortable. Species on the night consisted of mostly coalfish and bass with a few codling, eels, flounder, gilthead bream and whiting.

Looking gilty at Ferrypoint

The usual coarse fishing club matches and leagues have been taking place around the country and the mild weather has been beneficial in keeping the fish active. In Monaghan, the CM Lakelands Club fished a blustery match on Muckno, but skimmers don’t mind the wind and plenty were caught. The IASCaire Club also got out for round 3 of their Autumn League on Annaghierin, with skimmers also helping to bring up the weights for them. In the south east, Oaklands held a two day silver fish match where anglers had to sneak out the bigger silvers in between the carp, who were intent on gobbling up everything that was thrown at them.

In other coarse fishing news, there has been a change of venue for the National Coarse Fishing Federation of Ireland (NCFFI) All Ireland Youth Feeder Championships this Saturday; the event has been moved from Lough Allen to Lough Gowna due to storm damage and high water at the former venue. The NCFFI have this week named the U15 and U20 teams who will represent Ireland at the World Youth Angling Championships in Spain in 2025 – congratulations to all of those elite young anglers who made the grade.

With wild trout and salmon fishing wrapped up until next year, we have a review of the final month of the season on Lough Corrib, where fly fishing was reasonably good for what turned out to be a fairly warm and dry month, but trolling was even better. In the south east, we have our usual newsletter from Piscari-Fly and this week the guys are fishing Laois Angling Centre and then heading to Wales for a practice session for the Hanak European Grayling Festival around the River Dee.

All calm on Corrib

Pike angling reports were thin on the ground this week, but Midlandangling.com’s Mick Flanagan had great fun after jacks on the Inny. Fish were hunting hard, hitting every lure he had and Mick had a ball fishing for them. The Newbridge and District Pike Angling Association will hope that the pike are just as active for their open pike competition this November; they have announced the date – it will be held on Sunday, 24th, on Blessington Lake in Wicklow, so make sure and contact them to take part.

Specimen Fish

The deadline for submitting specimen claims is approaching fast. If you were lucky enough to catch a specimen fish this year and want to claim it, get your paperwork into the ISFC as soon as possible so that the ISFC can assess it. All specimen claims to be submitted by 31 October. Further information is available here.

Inny alive with jacks for Midlands Fishing

Mick Flanagan of Midlandangling.com had a great few hours on the Inny this week. Mick had planned to take his boat down the river for a bit of reconnaissance, but low water meant that he had to do his recce from the riverbank. On went the walking boots and off went Mick with rod in hand for what he described as a cracking few hours of river piking.

From his selection of paddle tails, it didn’t seem to matter what lure he tied on, with fish throwing themselves at the lures, sometimes hooking, sometimes not – even Nemo got a swim and landed a fish or two. None of the fish were monstrous, but who needs a monster when you can have such fun on the jacks.

Pike fishing around Mullingar Angling Centre

Some good fishing in September as season wound down on Corrib

Lough Corrib saw a fairly dry September, with plenty of warm weather, and much less wind than August. The second mayfly hatch petered out, but good hatches of sedge continued throughout September, and the second hatch of olives brought some fish to the surface too.  Fishing guide Kevin Molloy reported that flyfishing was reasonably good for the month, averaging 2-3 fish per day, with wet and dry sedge patterns, including the Green Peter, doing most of the damage. Trolling was more successful, with his clients getting most fish on the troll. Liz O’Connor from Dublin had a 6.5lbs fish trolling, while renowned French singer Pierre Perret had a 6lbs fish. American couple Chris and Deby Ferguson had several fish to 7lbs trolling. Toby Gibbons and a group from Mayo fished for a couple of days and had 6 good trout to 5.5lbs on fly, the best fish caught by Eoin McGreal.

Larry McCarthy from Corrib View Lodge reported excellent fishing to Daphnia patterns around Inchagoill in the first week of September, some boats reporting 6-10 fish per day but it died off suddenly and fishing was tougher for the rest of the month. The second hatch of olives was not as good as other years, but the days with light winds provided decent fishing to dry olives in some of the bays on the eastern side. Fish were choosy, and size 16-18 flies fished on 6X leaders were most successful. Wet fly fishing was decent when winds were stronger, particularly on the western shore and around Roeillaun.

And so ends another game season on Corrib. While pike anglers and wildfowlers will be out over the winter, for the most part the lake will be quiet, the fish will be off spawning, and the trout anglers will be tying flies, painting boats and thinking of a rolling wave and rising fish in 2025.

In the meantime, here is a short video of what the trout are dong at the moment in spawning streams all around Corrib. We wish them every sucess!

Close shave in Connacht Closed as Barber wins gold medal

Corrane Sea Angling Club hosted the Connacht Closed Gold Medal recently, with venues on Achill Island and Mulranny chosen for the 3-session event, held over 2 days.

Fishing was difficult in the first session and anglers were split between two zones, the venue was Dugort beach. The difficulty of the fishing was outlned by the results, with 5 and 6 fish being enough to take zone wins, with Colin Harty and Sean Ivory from Galway Bay SAC both taking maximum points from the first session. Kevin O’Hara and Kevin Barber (also GBSAC) took zone seconds.
The second session was at Mulranny Beach and fished into darkness. Dogs and flats were the main species caught on the evening. Colin Harty maintained his 100% record with another zone win, while Corrane’s Shane Gilvarry won his zone. Kevin O’Hara and Ed Kilroy moved up the leaderboard with second places.
It was all to play for in the final session on Sunday morning at Keel beach. A very strong easterly breeze had come in which resulted in poor fishing, and quite a few blanks along the beach. It was tight right to lines up, when a single fish could have made the difference. In the end, a zone win for Corrane SACs Ed Kilroy saw him climb the leaderboard to third and bronze medal position. Colin Harty struggled in the final session, but two zone wins from Saturday saw him take second place and the silver medal.
And it was Mr. Consistency, Kevin Barber, with a second place to add to second and third on Saturday who won the Closed Gold Medal by a single point. Well done Kevin!
Kevin Barber (right) presented with his trophy and gold medal by Joe Chambers
Mike Varley also had a zone win, but it wasn’t enough to make the top 5 and the Connacht team for next year’s Inter-Provincial Competition. The team for next year will be Kevin Barber, Colin Harty, Ed Kilroy, Shane Gilvarry and Kevin O’Hara. Mike Varley and Sean Ivory missed out on the team by a single point in a very tight contest.
Top 5 make the Connacht team

Good luck to Team Ireland @ World Kayak Fishing Championships in Spain

The first ever World Championship for Kayak Fishing will take place in Valencia, Spain on 26–31 October, 2024.

Representing Ireland will be Walter Butler, Tomas Butler, Timothy O’Herlihy, Robert Wright, Patrick Gill, Denis O’Donovan and Joseph Stenning.

They face some stiff competition from nations like the USA, Portugal, Italy and the hosts, Spain, and they’ll be trying to capture some species wholly unfamiliar to the Irish angler, so the odds are stacked against them, but we wish them all the best on their journey – you just never know…

This event will be streamed live, so you can check in and see how the Irish team are doing.

IASCaire league fish Annaghierin

The IASCaire Feeder Fishing Club fished the 3rd Round of their Autumn League on Lough Annaghierin near Shercock in Cavan.

Fishing was technical as always and relatively calm day combined with the frost the night before did not help to improve the fishing! The mild weather of late mixed with excessive nutrients in the water has also contributed to an algal bloom on the lake.

It was mainly skimmers in the keepnets at lines out, with a few of the competitors managing to find decent sized skimmers and these helped to bring the catches up to respectable weights on the day!

TOP 3:

  • 1st Romas Na with 40 fish –  5.870kg
  • 2nd Vaidas Jagela, 19 fish –  4.670kg
  • 3rd Roman Hiszpan 32 fish – 4.580kg

After three rounds of fishing, it is all to play for:

Next venue will be Lough Namachree in a fortnight!

The NCFFI are delighted to announce that Team Ireland Youth will present in both the Under 20 and Under 15 categories at the World Youth Angling Championships of 2025 in Merida, Spain.

Youth Team travel and entry is subsidised by the NCFFI with support from Inland Fisheries Ireland and Irish Bait and Tackle Limited, The younger of the anglers who will be accompanied by their parents who will be looking to raise further funds to fulfill their travel needs and we welcome any support and/or sponsorship for the team.

Individual gold and team silver medals for Ireland at Boat World Championships @ Crosshaven,

While a very strong Croatia team took the Boat World Championship team gold medals home with them, Irish team member Liam O’Callaghan was the highest scoring angler across the three competition days and, pending an appeal around a FIPs-M scoring systems error, should be crowned world champion and outright individual gold medalist for the event. Not only that, but Team Ireland finished strongly – first overall on day three – to claim the team silver medal behind that impressive Croatian team.

Outright winners Croatia – congratulations to them

Ireland, who had finished in fifth place after day one, moved up into fourth after day two, after Liam O’Callaghan was top rod on the day, and had a smashing last day, finishing as top nation on the day to jump into the silver medal spot behind Croatia, with Italy in third place.

Team Ireland claim silver

World championship medals don’t come easily, no matter what the sport, and the Irish team of Jamie Murphy, Conor Purcell, Terry Boyle, Tomasz Kujawa, Liam O’Callaghan and John Dennehy can be proud of their finish. Countless hours of preparation and training are required before anglers can compete at this level and when that sacrifice results in a medal, it makes it all worthwhile.

Tomas (silver medal winner here) and Piotrek (gold medal winner at home nations) born in Poland and proud to fish for Ireland – and we’re proud to have them

Congratulations to Team Ireland and to Irish angling in general, as teams representing Ireland at international championships in sea, coarse, game and predator disciplines have brought home gold, silver and bronze in various age categories in recent times and long may it continue.

Piscari-Fly Newsletter 22 October

Peter Driver of Piscari Fly is back with his weekly roundup of the fishing scene on the Nore and beyond:

How’s the Fishing

Getting a cast in before the Storm at Laois Angling Centre.

On Sunday we had some bad weather coming in across Ireland with very strong & wet winds. Checking out the weather in the Windy App that we use for all our fishing destinations for pinpoint accuracy on winds and weather, you could see the winds weren’t to get bad till lunchtime. So Mark headed to Laois Angling Center in Coolrain, Co. Laois. Not far from his home place in Durrow.

On arrival the winds were light and the low winter sun was creeping up. Mark started off with a slow intermediate with a 12ft leader and had on one of Peter’s Sliver Minkies and Black and Silver Minkies, with success pulling up high. Fish were chasing on a fast very short strip retrieve. But soon switched off that and with winds picking up Mark moving to bung setup with a Black Egg at 2.5ft and below that a Pink Squirmy Worm at 4.5ft. Getting some great action on the bung. Mostly coming to the worm at that depth, and changing the middle dropper to find another pattern working.

Fish seemed to be moody due to the increasing changing winds as the day progressed, they were going deep at times and then coming up high. Alternating the depths on the Bung helped with this but was time consuming. When the fish where high, Mark used his 3rd rod which had floating line setup with a Peacock Foam Back Beetle and a Croxia Beetle on a 14ft cast. Covering rising fish and picking up some nice browns and good quality rainbows with this method.
Moving around to different pegs as we got closer to lunchtime, it was obvious that the winds were picking up, the fish had gone down and very little action up high. Mark moved to the shore lines facing directly into the wind making strong casts out, allowing the wind to move the Bung back towards the shoreline and drop offs, and in turn picked up some great numbers of fish for the last hour. As soon as the Bung would come in line with the drop off, the Bung would shoot under and into fish on the worm pattern 5.5ft down.

It was difficult to determine the Bung in the wavy conditions but focusing it’s behaviour, we were able to notice takes and catch some good sized fish, that fought great.
By 1.30pm it was time to get out of there and head to the car, the wind had blown the tackle box over enough times along with casting being impossible into the wind. However, it was a great few hours from around 9am, and was well worth the spin over. Reports were the lake was packed on Saturday, where as on Sunday, Mark had the whole lake to himself and our friend Rodger.

Winter Tying-Fly of the Week

Peter’s Black Minkie and Silver Minkie

Whether I am fishing for Rainbow Trout on a stocked lake or Wild Brown Trout in the Loughs or even on rivers these are 2 Minkies that I am never without. They just constantly catch fish wherever I go. They have gotten me out of more holes over the years, staring a blank in the face and they just always pull a fish for me. A simple tie but very effective, I am tying up a couple now for the stocky season for my box. I will be pulling these along the bank all throughout the season just mixing it up between the 2.

They can be done in various sizes, I tie them right down to a size 12 and up to a size 6 and just really good fry pattern that fish will take even on a day that the lake has been hammered for a period of time and the fish have stopped chasing or are being wary. One of these fished slow on a small size 12 can be super effective. Or even fished as a team, the 2 together can be fantastic again in small size 12

Hook: Size 12 to 6 pisacri fly streamer hook

Thread: Piscari-Fly Kevlar (super fine strong thread)

Ribbing: Clear Mono 0.12

Tail: Piscari Red Flash Dubbing

Body: Piscari Silver Flash Dubbing

Wing: Piscari Rabbit Zonkers in black or silver-grey

Head: Piscari Red Flash Dubbing brushed out really well

Eyes: 3mm Silver eyes stuck on with either resin or superglue whichever you prefer.

Here is a link to a small pack I have put together for you to tie quite a few of these with minkies hooks, eyes and all included. If you have any questions do give me a shout.
