Johan and Andrea for Holland were over to Melview Fishing Lodge once again for a pike fishing trip; they have been a few times before and just love fishing in the lakes and rivers of Ireland. Host Kevin Lyons said: these guys are happy-go-lucky anglers who just love to be out on the water taking in the nature and scenery that Ireland has to offer, and a few Pike along the way is a bonus for them. They managed some nice Pike during their trip, mainly trolling using lures along with a few dead bait sessions; it’s great to see you again, guys, and I hope to see you again next year.

Regular anglers Sean, Bill and John who are regular visitors to Melview Fishing Lodge in Longford were up for another pike session with host Kevin. Things got off to a slow start for the guys on day one but picked up on day two, they managed some lovely fish to 97cm using both lures and dead baits.

Kevin said the weather during their stay was changing from day to day, which I’m sure had a lot to do with the slow start. Thanks again guys and looking forward to seeing you again soon for the winter Pike fishing sessions.

Blues & Bulls for West Cork Charters

Dave Edwards of West Cork Charters had a busy few days chasing blue shark during the week, with 11 landed on one day. He also had some divers on the boat who managed to take some great underwater photos of these beautiful fish.

They tried for skate later in the week, but the fishing was poor, so they switched up and went after some bull huss. They were glad that they did, as they managed a couple of fine specimen-sized fish.

West Cork Charters operates the Silver Dawn, a 41′ Rodman 1250 with twin 430 HP Engines out of Courtmacsherry. The range of fishing found within close range of Courtmacsherry is superb, with trips producing anything between 6 and 15 different species as a norm and in excess of 20 is possible if anglers are prepared to change methods and use different baits and lures throughout their trip. As a rule mackerel, pollock, cod and ling are usually encountered but several species of wrasse along with whiting, pouting, coalfish, bull huss, conger and many more are often added to the catch.
If you do choose to head offshore to sample the superb shark fishing available within 10 miles of Courtmacsherry, there is a very strong chance of encountering blue sharks and an increasing chance of bringing a porbeagle shark to the boat.

Three in a row for Steven Whyte at the All Ireland Method Feeder Championships

The NCFFI report that the final of the All Ireland Method Feeder Championships was held on Oaklands Lake over the weekend. Thirty competitors had qualified for the event over two heats that were held during the summer in Gaulmoylestown and Oaklands Lake.

And it was a familiar face that topped the standings at the end of the day, as Steven Whyte made it three in a row as his 43kg bag won him his third successive championship. That’s a pretty impressive run for Steven 👏👏👏, and no doubt he’ll be hoping to make it four in a row next year. Full results below:

League outing number two turned out to be one that will be remembered for a long time for the quality of fish got on the night. It was everything you imagine autumn beach fishing to be, and the stars aligned on the night for the 20 lucky anglers present.

Double painted ray for Aaron Vambeck

A manageable weed free surf and an overcast night and it was bedlam from the off with large small-eyed (painted) rays coming in including a fine double haul for Aaron that crossed over into Pat’s line who also had a trout on at the same time. Proinnsias had 4 rays and Brian had 3 as others had two and singles with a total of 15 painted rays got with the biggest being Irish specimen length and a new club record of 83cm for Shane Cunningham.

Also, there were a few fine bass with 3 landed and a very big fish breaking a snood.

Large scores with some great fishings missing out on the top prizes. A good run of flounders on the north zone ended the evening with a few 35cm fish but the longest a 40cm fish for Cara Boyle winning €58.

In 2nd overall with 8 counting flounder and a painted ray for 303pts winning €58 was Shane Cunningham.

And in 1st overall with 6 flounder, 2 trout, a coley and a painted ray 4 species 397pts winning €116 well done to Gavin Dorrian.

Earlier in the week, Daragh McGuinness had a few fine bullhuss from the boat with the biggest going over a meter long between 105- 110cm if you could get it settled to measure before release while fishing alone not easy measuring.

Blue skies and sunshine make for good fishing on the Clare Dragoon

This week’s crew picked a good week to visit west Clare and go fishing on the Clare Dragoon! Fantastic weather and building tides has produced some great fishing, even earlier in the week when the wind was still a problem. Anchoring produced slow fishing so a switch to light tackle gave great fun on the drift.

Among the catch this week were some nice John Dory, a spectacular looking fish and very good eating too.

There was good pollack fishing, with a lot returned, some nice wrasse and a cracking cod too.

Improving weather brings great fishing, and squid, in Galway Bay

Skipper John Fleming says it’s the time of year when squid start showing up, and indeed, over the last week plenty have been caught. We’re sure Sandy the squid man will be happy! As well as the squid, some nice pollack have been caught, with no shortage of mackerel. A session at anchor also produced some nice spurs, more pollack and a few whiting. Fishing improving with the weather and the big tides too, let’s hope the good weather hangs around anyway!

A regular day is between 9am- 6pm from either Rossaveal, Spiddal or Galway depending on species being sought after. Fishing on the inshore reefs for pollock, cod, ling, wrasse, conger eel and mackerel can be reached in 10 minutes from departure, while our offshore reef marks are within 45 minutes of departure. Our ground fishing for tope, spurdog, ray, bullhuss, turbot, plaice and the giant common skate can all be reached within the hour which ensures the most amount of time is spent fishing.
The shark season usually starts at the end of June and runs into late October, this is the ultimate angling adrenaline rush with these hard fighting blue and porbeagle sharks all being tagged and released safely.

More bluefin action reported from Donegal Bay

Killybegs Fishing Trips have been out hunting tuna again in Donegal Bay. Read their report below…

Another busy day at the Tuna. Five good hook ups but only 4 fish to the boat. The first fish was the smallest at 150lb the 2nd was the biggest at 370lb. Unfortunately we lost our 3rd fish, after a long battle and only a couple of meters to go. The mighty tuna straighten the hook. the 4th fish was not bad at 240lb and the 5th fish was another good fish at 360lb, so a very good day at sea.

We also received a short tuna report from Declan Kilgannon, skipper of the “Kiwi Girl” fishing out of Mullaghmore, Co. Sligo. Last week, Declan was out with a group of German anglers for their first “bluefin experience” and what an experience it was…they hooked four fish, broke in one and landed two up to 300lb. A memorable day for the visiting anglers.
