Good turn out for Lough Lene Cup

25/03/12 Lough Lene Cup. Last Sunday we fished the first Trout competition on Lene, and there was a good turn out of Anglers. On the day Peter McCann of Balbriggan topped the day with a fine Brown trout of 1.67kg. Peter was fishing with John Gallagher, and caught his winning fish on his second cast on competition day.  John Mulvanney was 2nd with 1.52kg, and 3rd Noel McLoughlin 1.42kg. The Junior anglers did well and Philip Keena produced a fish of .72kg to take Top Rod, and young Finn Fitzgerald of Duleek was 2nd in the Junior section.  Finn featured in Angling Focus last year on Owel, with his pals from Mullingar, and his dad George won the Ace Cup on Owel in 2011.

GRIFFERTY AND HIS PIKE. Yes the weeks are ticking away and soon we will be venturing out on Ree for the 3- Day International Pike Festival, and World Cup boat pike competition. Last week Mullingar Angler Damian Grifferty rattled the scales on Ree with a huge pike well in the high doubles. In the coming weeks many anglers will be checking out Ree, and we will be in the thick of the action

Good to have the cod back in Donegal Bay. These three lovely cod were caught on a sunny Sunday afternoon (25 March) just 30 minutes from Mullaghmore Harbour. The fish were caught using Shamrock cod rigs with no bait aboard Prospector 1, skippered by Peter Power.

They were eaten that evening with chips and tartare sauce. Yum.

Cracking fish at Annamoe Trout Fishery media competition

Saturday 24th March: Enjoyed a great day fishing the annual media competition organised by Derek Evans, angling correspondent with the Irish Times, at Brian Nally’s well appointed Annamoe Trout Fishery located close to Glendalough in Co. Wicklow. A warm day punctuated by a brisk variable south/south east breeze, the resident rainbows were obliging, at least in the morning, and all 16 participants landed some cracking fish.

What’s catching Brian?”, I asked eyeing the selection of flies and lures available within Annamoe’s club house, a spacious log cabin where anglers can relax before, during, and after fishing. Today at half time we were to enjoy a slap up hot buffet meal courtesy of Annamoe Trout Fishery and plenty of teas, coffees, and biccies in between, “you spoiled us Brian and thank you”. “Try that red bead head zonker lure, it was working very well last week”, replied Brian, so I did and it still worked as I was to find out.

Three casts in my rod locked and the first of four rainbows lured by that red strip of fluff powered off. All giving a good account of themselves, they took a while to get to the net. Fishing an intermediate line to a 15 foot leader with a six pound tippet, slow long draws of the line worked for me. Using barbless hooks I lost two more fish which threw the iron after spectacular jumps, that while witnessing Killarney fly fishing machine John Buckley take 21 fish in the morning session. John blanked in the afternoon, as I did, but he still did enough to retain the trophy with Dave McBride of South Side Angling coming second. Thank you to Brian for your hospitality, Derek for inviting me, and to all the participants that I know and the new people I met, Ed, Remy, Chris, and Rob, see you on the water and tight lines….

12lb 12ozs salmon taken off Finlough at Delphi

Paul Duffy with his 12lb12ozs fish from Finlough

24/03/12 Fishing conditions have become increasingly difficult since my last update with water levels now at 12cms.

We have however managed to land 3 fish since my last update.

Peter Joyce managed to land his second fish of the week while fishing with Paul Duffy. The fish was taken in the Rock Pool and again on a Willie Gunn. It weighed in at 10lbs.

We then had 2 on Thursday off Finlough.

The first was taken by Paul Duffy and was well deserved as Paul doesn’t catch that many fish with us, so if any one deserved it he did. The fish weighed in at 12lbs12ozs with sea lice and was taken on a Willie Gunn.

Per Axman one of our Swedish party had a fish of 7lbs13ozs in the afternoon on a Sunrae Shadow.

Since then conditions have become increasingly difficult with not only low water levels but also winds becoming SE and squally.

Our new anglers coming in this week will have to concentrate more on the beauty of this place than the poor fishing conditions but here this can change at any time.

Start of Summertime at Drowes Salmon Fishery

The fishing has been quite patchy in recent weeks, with blank days interspersed with days of multiple catches. Fish sizes have varied too from 6lbs to a couple of larger double figure fish. Notable days were March 14th, when 3 fish were reported, 2 from Briney’s and one from the Perch Pool, all on Cascade and March 18th when A. Mc Grane had a fish of almost 14lbs on fly from the Island Pool, C. Gardiner had a 9lbs fish on flying c from the High Bank and B. Grimes had a 10lbs fish on prawn from the Blackwater.
The water level has continued to drop and now stands at 0.5 metres, quite a low spring level. There seems to be numbers of fish running, as there have been decent numbers seen and reported lost, but it may take a little fresh water to improve prospects. It may be some time before fresh water arrives as the forecast is for continued dry, settled, mild conditions for the week ahead.

Caught in draft net dilemma – Irish Times

No small fry: Young prize winners at the Tolka River Environmental Alliance fishering competition with Fisheries officer Josie Mahon and Community Garda Rosanna Caul from Blancharstown Garda station

ANGLING NOTES: IT IS my understanding that a proposal is before the Minister of State for Natural Resources, Fergus O’Dowd, to extend the estuary draft net season from its current commencement date of May 12th to a start date in mid-April.  Fisheries on the Owenduff and Owenmore Rivers and Carrowmore Lake in the west of Ireland pride themselves on a valuable run of spring salmon. To bring forward the draft net season would have a detrimental effect on fragile spring stocks and the angling resource in the area.

The musical road to a fishing castle – The Telegram

In 2006, when my youngest daughter Allison was in Grade 12, my wife Goldie and I tagged along on a musical tour of Ireland. I’d never imagined myself travelling on a tour bus with a bunch of musicians. It wasn’t quite as intense as depicted by the Eagles on their Hotel California album, but I felt the stress. To fish was the only answer. I might not be much on the tin whistle, but I could riffle a Blue Charm as good as most. I’d snag an Irish salmon on a fly I’d tied with Newfoundland moose hair. How’s that for cultural sharing?……..read full article….24/03/12……..The Telegram
