I have met some characters over the years on the angling scene, and Allister Johnson is up there with the best. Allister is Director of Johnson Caravans in Letterkenny, and enjoys his fishing big time. As a rule he spends his time sea angling, but fancied his chances at latching onto a good pike.

The Allister boy dropped down to Mullingar with his good lady, and spent a few nights in Bloomfield, and was very impressed with the hotel. I was under pressure to produce fish as we had only 2 days to get Allister his magical double. I took a leave from the Paul Daniels Magic Show, and waved my magic wand on the Midland Lakes. Allister boated a huge pike of 25lbs, and will be back in Mullingar quite soon. I also dropped a lure down deep and caught one of my favourite fish, a beautifully coloured Perch.

It can be hard going on Ennell for Trout, but when this Jewel of a lake produces, it pulls from the Top drawer. Last Sunday September 25th we fished the Christy Sleator Cup in very blustery conditions. On the day Tosh Grimes from Ginnell terrace produced a real Ennell beauty of 5.582lbs.Hot on his heels was Killucan Angler Colin Cahill with another super fish of 4.184lbs, and Jimmy Stenson was 3rd with 2.154lbs.This was the last L.E.T.P.A. club competition, and it was well supported, with many Dubs, back in Town after their bit of luck on the football scene. Ennell will produce some fine Trout as the season closes and it worth checking out.

LAKELAND COMPETITION

Next Sunday October 2nd Lakeland Anglers will hold their End of Season trout competition. It will be a cracking day out on the Midland lakes weather permitting, and you have a choice of lakes. The competition will be fished on Ennell, Owel, and Derravaragh, and weigh-In is in Caffreys that night at 8pm.I hopes to be Out & About and catch a few anglers on camera.

Well I think that my encounters with these magnificent creature have come to a end for this season anyway. Our the last three trips have been without any runs at all and that’s at the three different venues where I have had many of them this season.

The last of my Dutch crews had only 1 porbeagle last week and they had three other goes at them.  I think its time to call it a day as the fuel burn is not cheap and the hours spent isn’t worth it either. A big well done to Pieter from Holland with the last porgie of the year, by the way Pieter is 7 foot tall .

Les Humphreys,  Rodger Beal, Phil Rogers and Tony Clawson were over for their annual fishing trip to Ireland and once again stayed with Kevin and Jane Lyons of Melview Lodge. Four days out of the six they had to fish in high winds, heavy rain and raising water levels, Kevin said this had to be the worst conditions I have seen any of my guests fish in. However despite the bad weather they still managed to catch some good Bream, Hybrids, Roach and Perch during there stay. Prebaiting and fishing only two venues using feeder tactics paid off for them in the end.

Fishing in and around the Longford area has been steady, the bad weather of the past weeks has affected catch weights but the fish are still feeding well. At the time of writing the weather has improved and looks good for the rest of the week so we will wait and see if the catches improve, again feeder has proved the best method along with prebaiting the night before.

The Belgium lads are back for their third time this year to do some course and Pike fishing so tune in next week to see how they get on.

Carlow CAC win over disabled anglers

Carlow Coarse Angling Club have once again managed to bring the sport of coarse angling to a wider audience and have gathered a new momentum. The club has previously been described as one of the most active clubs in the country and they have proved this by running workshops for people with disabilities and women interested in the sport. Recently the club have been busy in assisting in developing a six week course for several different interested parties in conjunction with the Angling Council of Ireland the National Coarse Fishing Federation of Ireland (N.C.F.F.I.), Inland Fisheries Ireland and the Carlow and Waterford Sports Partnerships. Groups in attendance were the Carlow branch of the Irish Wheelchair Association, Brain injury Ireland, Women from Waterford & Carlow and disabled anglers from Wexford and Carlow. The workshops have now reached their halfway stage and have been a huge success with plenty of fish being caught and lots of interest being generated in coarse angling.

The Carlow club has eight Angling Council of Ireland trained coaches who devote their time free of charge. Carlow CAC hasrecently been in talks with Mr John Flynn from I.F.I. (Inland Fisheries Ireland) in relation to contributing to programmes run in schools in the Carlow area. I.F.I. will run the schooling end of the programme whilst the club will host the practical days on the river Barrow in Carlow Town.

Pike to 87 cm on the Suck, but mostly flooded

Pike anglers are also finding fishing conditions difficult.  Best Pike from the Suck Valley area was an 87cm by a french angler, who also recorded many fish in the 2-3lb bracket.  An Italian visitor had an 85cm pike and also two smaller fish for one visit to the area.  All were happy with their visits.

Trout fishing on Acalla and O'Flynn going well, dapping very effective

Numbers were also down in Lough Accalla.  The best fish reported here, a 3lb rainbow by Dee Dowd from Ballinasloe. A 2 lb was had by A Doyle, Ballygar. The best result from Lough O’Flynn was reported by Noel Kearns and Paddy CUllen from Offaly.  The were dapping the daddy and grasshoppper, also wet flies proving the most successful.  In five visits, they had a totoal of 47 fish.  Many of the fish were released.  Their best day was the 22/09, when they had 7 fish, most of which werer in excess of 2lb.  Their best fish was announced just short of 3lb.
Water is very high and black on Lough O’Flynn at present.  Barry Davis, Ballymoe, reported 2 nice fish, 2lb+ to the buzzer.  Barry had this catch during a short visit to the lake on Monday evening last.  There is still anglers reporting that there is still big stocks of fish on O’Flynn and Lough Accalla. Providing weather and water conditions are a little more conducive, good fishing should be had over the coming 2 weeks.

Coarse anglers on the Suck flooded out of it

For most part weather and water conditions are far from conducive to angling.  As a result few anglers were observed over the last 10 days on our fisheries.  The mid and lower Suck are particularly affected due to flooding.  With most of the well known course angling haunts inaccessible.  The River Shannon at Lanesborough provided catches to a best of 10lb to the few anglers who visited.

Some good pike recorded at the two day pike competition at Ballinasloe

The Ballinasloe two day pike competition took place on the 24th and 25th of September.

This competition was a heaviest bag competition, much like a fed competition, there was prizes for heaviest fish.

The Carlton Shearwater Hotel was the venue for the draw and the Prize giving.  The first day was fished on a very high River Suck and the second day was fished on the River Shannon at Shannonbridge.

The results were as follows:

1st Sean Markey 13 pike for 46 lbs 12 ozs
2nd Rory McAllorum 10 pike for 32 lbs
3rd Godfrey Donohue 12 pike for 31 lbs 6 ozs

Heaviest fish was caught by Joey Bonnie 15 lbs 12 ozs

the organisers want to thank all of the anglers that turned out to fish, the conditions were very tough, the high water didn’t help, but all that aside it was a very enjoyable weekend, roll on next year.

The dates for next year are the 21st 22nd & 23rd of September 2012

Spinning in higher water levels produces 389 salmon from the River Moy

As the season draws quickly to a close, the River Moy is continuing to provide great sport for many anglers, with locals and international visitor’s alike reporting success. Once again it was the mid and upper fisheries which reported better catch returns, with the weekly total for the system at 389 salmon.

Water levels remained high for much of the week, impacting on angling effort and catch reports from the Moy Fishery. Just two salmon were reported for the week in the Ballina town fisheries, with Jonathan Sykes, England, landing one on the Ridge Pool with a spinner, and Peadar Duffy, Monaghan, also having success on spinner on the Fresh Water beat. The Ballina Salmon Angler’s water produced a lot of fish, particularly on their upper beats, including one of 5 lb. for Colin Rea, N.Ireland.

Mount Falcon also enjoyed a successful week, with many fish caught, the majority of those being released. Byrne’s, Armstrong’s and Gannon’s fisheries also produced their share, as did the Foxford Fishery. Rinanney once again yielded many salmon, and at Cloongee a total of 22 were reported, with the spinner proving very productive. Jonathan Sykes once again had good fortune while spinning, banking and releasing two fish, with Clare Macinnes, England, enjoying similar success. Eric Pondarre, France, Michael Rozychi, Poland, and Jaceh Scawomir Kolaszwski, also Poland, all had good sport while spinning, accounting for one salmon each.

The East Mayo Anglers Association waters’ was suitable for fly fishing for periods over the past week, with many anglers having good sport on the fly. Rene Koenigs, Germany, landed one of 5 lb. to the fly, while Matthais Engles, Germany, had one of 7 lb. to the fly. The fly also yielded good catches for fellow German anglers Domenick Weber and Dietmar Jansen, who both had 10lbs salmon on the E.M.A.A. water.
