Trip of a lifetime for Conor in Cork

Conor into a bass on the fly

David Norman from West Cork Bass sent us in the cracking report from his few days’ fishing with nephew Conor Fitzmaurice who was visiting from Galway.

David tells the story:

I had a visit from my nephew Conor Fitzmaurice from Co Galway for some coastal lure fishing and it turned out very well for him indeed.

Covid has been particularly hard on teenagers as we all know so we were keen to give him a break and introduce him to some new ways of fishing that differ from those he’s used to at home.

Day 1 we fished off the rocks in a strong Northerly wind which was tough but got him back into the swing of fishing, we witnessed Gannets diving on Mackerel just offshore and a Minke Whale in the mix surfacing multiple times in front of us.
Conor on the rocks
By chance I got a message from Richie Ryan aka @eirebass to say that the Cork Harbour Pollock Fly trip we’d been planning was on. Richie kindly agreed for me to bring Conor along and expertly took him from beginner to winner on Day 2 in glorious weather.
Conor and pollock
Day 3 was always planned as a Kayak fishing trip. We only had a day left to get Conor comfortable enough with the Kayak and coach him on surface fishing techniques, which is a lot to take in for any Angler, but having done so, and in near perfect conditions
many Bass from small to mid size were taken on surface lures and released with a bigger fish lost at the boat early on! It was great to see this range of sizes and hopefully a good sign for the future…

Conor and David tackle a kayak caught bass
Conor witnessed action that I’ve only been dreaming of since last Summer, including a Bass that threw spray over us as it attacked the lure inches from our Kayaks as we sat side by side on the calm sea making us both jump!

So all in all a trip of a lifetime for young Conor who took it all in his stride remarkably well and learnt a lot more about what coastal angling in Ireland has to offer.

Primary school poets ‘hook’ prizes in national competition

Aoibhé Kieran, 1st Prize, Sixth Class Category

Two young poets from Tipperary and Carlow have scooped the top prizes in this year’s ‘Something Fishing’ national poetry competition, which is organised by Inland Fisheries Ireland (IFI) in conjunction with the Blackrock Education Centre.

Orlaith Timmons, a fifth-class pupil from Moycarkey National School in Thurles and Aoibhé Kieran, a sixth-class pupil from Ballon National School in Carlow each won the top prize in their categories for their nature-themed poetry.

Orlaith Timmons, 1st Prize Winner, Fifth Class Category

Earlier this year, primary school students around the country were challenged by Inland Fisheries Ireland to create an ‘acrostic’ poem, where the first letter of each line spells out the word ‘Stream’ (for an English language poem) or ‘Sruth’ (for an Irish language poem).

The national poetry competition is an important element of the wider ‘Something Fishy’ Educational Programme, aimed at primary school pupils aged between ten and thirteen. It educates students on the importance of biodiversity and on having sustainable habitats, fish and angling. Despite school closures during the 2020/2021 academic year, online content was still available to pupils and teachers through the official website at www.somethingfishy.ie.

Aoibhé Kieran, 1st Prize, Sixth Class Category

From over a hundred entries, the poetry competition judging panel also selected runners-up from Ballon National School and Bennekerry National School (Carlow), Scoil Mhuire National School in Corofin (Galway), Scoil Cholmcille in Greencastle (Donegal) and St Canice’s Girls National School in Finglas (Dublin).

The overall winners will receive a fishing kit to the value of €100 and runners-up will receive an outdoor field trip kit, to the value of €50. Third placed winners and special category winners will receive goody bags.

The ‘Something Fishy’ educational programme includes lesson plans for teachers and activity sheets based on the theme of the ‘Life cycle of salmon’ – Bradán. information about the programme is available from http://www.somethingfishy.ie/.

More bass for Killybegs Mariners

Members of Killybegs Mariners Sac enjoyed more good bass action during the week. See their report below…

A fantastic evening at the bass for the gang out with the lure rods wading through the shallows providing the best results with three bass in four casts for Charlie on a hot spot.

More bass fell to the baits at the surf later on for both Christopher and Charlie as the sun set the sky on fire on a great evening’s fishing.

Grilse and sea trout running at Costello

Glenicmurrin Lough

Fishery manager Brian Curran reports on recent fishing from the Costello and Fermoyle Fishery in Connemara.

The Costello and Fermoyle fishery has, like a number of other fisheries , seen a steady inflow of both salmon and sea trout since the start of June. With the rise in water levels about two weeks ago, the system has been steadily releasing the water from its largest lough, Glenicmurrin and allowing both salmon and sea trout to make their way up the system.

There have been a number of salmon caught by the following anglers:

June 9th Geoffrey Fitzjohn 1 salmon 6 lbs , June 21st 1 salmon 5lbs

June 10th and 14th: Niall Lynch 1 salmon 4lbs each

June 15th, Sean Bollustrim 2 salmon June 18th 1 salmon and was broken in a large fish on 22nd June.

June 20th Neil Spellacy 2 salmon and 5 sea trout all 3/4lbs +

We are hoping for rain to bring up levels but it is great to see the sea trout running in numbers as we had such a poor year last year, possibly because the smolts did not seem to leave the system due to the very warm conditions last spring and low water which did not flush them out.

Grilse provide great sport in Galway

Keep them wet. The most important thing for successful catch-and-release is to keep the fish in the water

James Quinn reports from Galway with welcome news of the grilse run.

8-14 June

For the week of the 8th to 14th, 42 fish were recorded. Fish started to  enter system  from the 13th in any sort of numbers, a little late on last year but we will take it!

The biggest for that week was Cillian Garvey from Dublin, with a 10.5lbs fish on fly to go nicely with a 5lbs fish in the same session. Fish ranged from 3.5 to 8.5lbs that week.

Father and son team Michael and Gary Rogers from Dublin had 4 fish and released one ranging from 4.5 to 6lbs. Jim and Michael Wilson had a fish apiece  at 4.5 and 5lbs. A lot of anglers had their quota which is 2  fish to be taken per session.

Michael Brown from Clare had a brace on the shrimp, 4.5 and 5.5lbs. Sean McManmon and Paddy Murray had a fish apiece.

15-22 June

The following week – June 15th to 22nd, we had 91 fish taken mainly to the fly.

The best fish  was 10.8lbs which fell to Terry McDermott from N.I. 15 to 20% of fish were released.

Keep them wet. The most important thing for successful catch-and-release is to keep the fish in the water

Tony Kavanagh had a brace of 3 and 5lbs on fly. Liam Gilsenan also had a brace of nice fish 5.5 and 6lbs from the high bank on fly. Damien Nolan had two for 6 and 4.5lbs on the fly.

Numbers of fish have noticeable increased in the last few days, with plenty of fish coming to the fly. I got in for an evening session myself and had two fish of 3 and 6lbs on fly, both released. Conditions are perfect for the fly at the moment, with one gate open on the weir.

With numbers of grilse increasing each day and one gate open on the weir, conditions look good for fishing for the next few weeks. 25 salmon reported from the Ilen river.

Best 12lbs by a syndicate angler.

Go fishing…

The River Ilen is a medium size spate river that fishes best on a dropping flood for both salmon and sea trout. Spinning, worm and fly fishing are the methods used and allowed on club water.

The river is beautiful and a joy to fish, pools along club waters are easily accessible with seats, steps and stiles put in place for the anglers comfort. With selective tree pruning done along the river in recent years fly fishing has become a more available option especially on the lower river with numerous pools opened up to suit fly fishermen, night time fly fishing for sea trout is a pleasure with great stocks of trout entering the river from April.
