Salmon being released by Mr. Matthew Solon with his Gillie Mr. Neil O’Shea of www.oshealoughcurrane.com
Salmon being released by Mr. Matthew Solon with his Gillie Mr. Neil O’Shea of www.oshealoughcurrane.com

Vincent Appleby reports from Lough Currane which was busy over the Easter weekend and some fine salmon were landed…

13/4/17 There were a nice few boats out manipulating their lures around the points and ledges and into the deep and out to the Bull, as the fly anglers cast their flies into the current or into the Ledge, trying to entice A wild Atlantic Salmon and as you can tell by my writing my Noble Anglers failed miserably this Holy Thursday. Wind SW light to fresh with good cloud cover. Amount of rainfall 0.8mm. Maximum air temperature 12.4c.

14/4/17 All the headlines come from the Bungalow on the North shore. Caherciveen Angler Dr. Jim Comerford, while trolling, caught a fine 7 lbs. Salmon and you can say without any fear of contradiction that Jim had a good Friday. For the rest of the angling community and their manipulations the least said the soonest mended. Wind West light with good cloud cover. Amount of rainfall 0.5mm. Maximum air temperature 12.6c.

15/4/17 They say a good angler never losses his touch and today was a perfect example when renowned retired Gillie Mr. Brod O’Sullivan of Waterville, while fishing with his good friend Terence from Co Mayo, caught a cracker of a 13 lbs. salmon on the troll going by the Major’s point. Now for quote of the day from  retired Gillie Mr. Brod O’Sullivan, “I and Terence showed those so called professionals anglers how its done” and I must say its not bad for a Man in his eighties.  Just for the record there were 12 boats out manipulating this Easter weekend.

Gillie Mr. Michael O’Sullivan of [email protected] and Mr. John McBride from Co Down caught a nice 3lbs Grilse on the World famous Butler Pool at www.watervillegolflinks.ie

Wind North light to fresh with reasonable cloud cover. Rainfall 3.3mm. Maximum air temperature 11.4c.

16/4/17 This Easter Sunday we start on the North Shore and at the Bungalow, in the C&R fly department, Mr. Matthew Solon, from Co Clare, While fishing with is Gillie Mr. Neil O’Shea of www.oshealoughcurrane.com caught a fine 8lbs. salmon on the fly today and sportingly put back this fine fish so it can fight the elements of the Commeragh River and hopefully spawn this December. Just for the record Mr. Matthew Solon is also a professional Fishing Guide and works as a Gillie on the Ponoi river in Russia.

Now we stay on the North Shore and head East down the Shore line and to Waterville Boats and at [email protected] Mr. Michael Mymes caught a fine 2 ½ lbs. Sea Trout on the troll while fishing with is Gillie Mr. Michael O’Sullivan of [email protected].  Now we head across the Lake to the South side and catch of the day Mr. Jove Panlilio from the Philippines caught a cracker of a 13 lbs. Salmon on the troll, while fishing with his Gillie Mr. Frank Donnelly of www.lakelandshouse.com They say a picture tells a story and you can say without any fear of contradiction that’s one satisfied Angler and all I can say is congratulations and well done.

There were at least 10 boats out this day on Lough Currane, wind NW light to fresh with good cloud cover, maximum air temperature 11.5c.

17/4/17 Straight to the hired out boat department of www.oshealoughcurrane.com Mr. Michael Solon of Co Clare caught and released a fine 10 lbs. Salmon, caught on the fly, while fishing with his Son Mr. Matthew Solon.

Now to the trolling department, Mr. Michael Mymes, fishing out of Waterville Boats and at [email protected] with his Gillie Mr. Bob Priestley, caught a fine 9 lbs. Salmon. Wind NW light to fresh with good cloud cover, rainfall 0.1mm. Maximum air temperature 13.4c.

18/4/17 Lough Currane was on the quiet side after the Easter Bank holiday weekend in all departments, but there was a bit of excitement around the Holly Island sometime today as a gillie and his client drifted in the Commeragh, boats watching from a distance new they were into a good fish? but as they got closer after about 20 minutes, they could see that the Gillie was on his mobile as his client waited patiently for him to finish his conversation and to carry on fishing. All I can say is some phone call some Gillie.  Wind light to calm with good cloud cover, rainfall 0.1mm. Maximum air temperature 12.0c.

That is your ration from the last week on Lough Currane, from your Gillie and the Waterville Fishery, no spin no fly’s just facts.

IT IS with sadness that I report the passing of former world shore angling champion Michael (Mick) Kearney following an illness borne with great courage and dignity. In 1991, Michael achieved the ultimate in shore angling by convincingly winning the gold medal at the world shore championships at St Moilets in southern France….

Sea bass stay close to Cork shores
Sea bass stay close to Cork shores

Researchers tracking fish in Irish waters have discovered behavioural patterns which could save the country substantial sums of money. A collaboration between NUI Galway, UCC and Cork Harbour Angling Hub examining the movements of sea bass in the south of Ireland shows that few fish left the region during the regular season and many returned following their winter migration. These findings could contribute towards halting the declining numbers of sea bass – an industry which is worth £60 million (€70 million) to the Irish economy…

Lough Ree fishing well ahead of pike Festival and World Cup

Mick Flanagan reports on the pike fishing on Lough Ree…

Mark Daly and his younger brother Jason have been reeling in some cracking pike in past few weeks. Mark, originally from Loughrea, and now settled in Killucan is finding a few hot spots for pike angling here in the Midlands. On Ree last week the Mark Boy rattled the scales with a pike of 22lbs, and it’s a super looking fish.

Ree will be a hive of activity in the coming weeks as the Lough Ree Festival and World Cup 3- day pike championships takes place at the end of April. This all takes place from Coosan Point.
