Anglers reel in praise – New Ross Standard

The organisers of the World Shore Angling Championships, which were held in Wexford last week, were praised at the meeting for the event’s outstanding success.
Cllr George Lawlor described the championships as a fantastic achievement. ‘The launch was tremendous and I congratulate everyone involved.’

He said the opening ceremony at the National Opera House was a spectacular event. ‘There were 29 teams from 18 countries in attendance and 4,000 bed nights were filled as a result of the championships. Anglers from outside Ireland said Wexford is one of the best shore angling locations in the Europe as we have two shorelines, one on the south west and one to the east. There are a number of Wexford people on the Irish team.’…

Golden sunsets and Pollack off the rocks in Donegal bay

Stefan Martin from Killybegs Mariners SAC reports on the fishing around Donegal Bay during the week:

Wed 23/11/2016: Another glorious day on Donegal Bay, blue skys and burning red sunsets as some nice pollack off the rocks.   We moved to the beach for sunset and some nice coley and flounder as we watched the small herring boats steam home with the dolphins riding their bows as the crimson sun slid down the sky behind them it was a joy to watch and great to see it.

Thurs 24/11/2016: Brrrrr, this codling wondering what we’re doing out in minus temperatures tonight.  Roads are dodgy in places so venue change for tomorrow nights outing switched to Fintra now, you can park at the old training pitch save going down the steep hill.

Sat 26/11/2016: Starry Starry night in Fintra last night for the league outing as the steam rose of the warm bay into the cold frost air we cast out in anticipation and the coleys were on the feed straight away and some nice dabs across the beach, a distance cast produced a lovely 33cm whiting for David and a few dogs made up the catch. Slow fishing and close scores at the end most points cash prize was won by Stefan Martin and longest fish prize was a nice 33cm whiting for David Matthews. Well done all. Next competition local will be the land and sea sports league leg 4 in Fintra Sunday week.

A great days fishing on the Barrow with surprisingly good weights

Eddie Long PRO of the Naas and District Anglers reports:

Great club match yesterday on the Barrow system.

We went out with the expectation of 5lb being a good weight after all our research yesterday resulted in blanks.

However it was a fish a chuck in most pegs which were generously spaced to give the best chance to everyone..

Surprisingly everyone had fish from the off with dace proving their predominant species in most pegs. Word was out that Paul Mc had roach going on the stick float and those with dace knew they would need lots of them to compete.

Most fished the pole but both winning weights from Paul Mc and Ollie Doyle stayed on rod and running line as the 2 venue experts battled it out only to be separated by 150g in the end..

First Paul McLoughlin 11 kg 400g
Second Ollie Doyle 11kg 250g.
Third Chris Moore 7kg 100g
Fourth Trev Campbell. 6kg 575

Many thanks to all that attended and the stew was an add bonus on a day that never warmed up.

PRO
Eddie Long.

Ireland’s Rivers Are Fragmented, New Project Aims to Remove Barriers – Afloat.ie

Ireland’s rivers are too fragmented due to human activity according to Inland Fisheries Ireland at the launch of new European project called AMBER which aims to restore river connectivity. The project, which stands for Adaptive Management of Barriers in European Rivers, seeks to raise awareness of the problems posed by stream fragmentation, the pressures on freshwater ecosystems and the need for innovative solutions to restore river connectivity.
