Ian Powell of Blackwater Lodge tells us of his enthusiastic anglers at Blackwater Lodge….

Andre Rivière (France) was fishing at Lower Kilmurry in the rain on October 1st. He caught this comparatively clean fish on the Island Stream ~6lb.

His companion Arnaud Richard also landed two cock fish.

This was the Island Stream later in the day. Still low – but looking very fishy!

The rain produced a very sharp rise at Millstreet some 20 miles above Mallow.
The river rose 1.25 metres peaking at 13.00. By 19.00 this evening it had peaked at Mallow – up 1.12m.
The upper river is very dirty this evening.
A Better September
September prove to be much better than last year with 220 fish to 15lb. caught for 446 rod days. August was also far better than it was in 2012. This was a remarkable achievement with the river at an all-time record low. 200 fish were taken in the 19 days to September 27th. for just 402 rod days. Many regular parties to the Lodge reported that they caught more fish during their week this year than they have ever caught before – & some have been coming here for 30 years.
Prospects
There is more rain forecast for Wednesday & Thursday & then it looks as if we will have a longer dry spell.
Already today, large numbers of fish were running through our upper beats. This latest flood should bring in the large numbers of fish which are reported to be waiting in the tidal reaches all the way down to Youghal. Expect superb runs & sport if/when it happens.
Time marches on and there are now just 11 days of the season remaining, now is the time to get fishing.
As last year, the 12 days in October will be Fly Only and Catch & Release.
Fishing is just €80/day for the remainder of the season. B&B is also only €35/person sharing.
