Vincent Appleby reports on a weekend of redemption, salmon style, on Lough Currane…
16/3/17 My Noble anglers are more interested in the Cheltenham races than the catching of a Wild Atlantic Salmon and why do I come to this conclusion because this evening after sending out text’s to all the Gillie’s, I got one reply and I quote, Back Ruby Walsh and No Salmon, well you can say without any fear of contradiction that text sums up today’s action in a nutcase and with five Boats out they ought to be ashamed of themselves. Wind N light to fresh with reasonable cloud cover, with the odd shower. Amount of rainfall 3.9 mm. maximum air temperature 13c. Minimum 8.3c.
17/3/17 This Saint Patrick’s Day was wild with rain all day and the old mobile was as silent as the lambs. Amount of rainfall yesterday was 1.6mm. Maximum air temperature 10.c. Minimum air temperature 6.7 c.

18/3/17 A cracker of a day on Lough Currane, normally I leave the best to last but not today and for good reason the race for the first Salmon to be caught on the fly is over, its quite ironic in one sense the gentleman in question is Mr. Hugh Patrick O’Connor of Boherbue North Cork, who came of age today in years and christened his 18th Birthday off with his first ever 6 ½ lbs. Salmon caught on the fly off the point of Grassy Island and as his Gillie Mr. Neil O’Shea of www.oshealoughcurrane.com said welcome to the O’Shea school of fly fishing. On a personal Note its great to see a young angler take the limelight and again well done Hugh and may it be the first of many.

Now we head for the trolling department and all the trolling headlines go to Mr. Noel Clancy of Waterville and Kildare, while trolling down the North Shore he caught himself a fine Salmon just under the 10 lbs. on the troll and by all accounts had a great battle and the rest is history, Wind WNW and blustery with heavy down pours at times. Amount rainfall was 5.2 mm, the maximum air temperature 11.3c minimum 7c.
19/3/17 There were 5 boats manipulating the Lough Currane waters and sadly my noble anglers couldn’t stimulate the wild Atlantic Salmon, so on that note we will head downstream to the World Famous Butler Pool of www.watervillegolflinks.ie where there was some mighty stimulation in Mr. Liam Higgins fly rod and for good reason, while fishing the pool he caught a cracker of a 13 lbs. Salmon and as his Son-in-law Local Gillie Mr. Dominic McGillicuddy netted Liam’s fine Salmon he said to Dominic, as you know I’m a pro Golfer and now I can say I’m now on top of the Waterville Pro fly league for 2017. Wind SW light to fresh and overcast with misty rain. Amount of rainfall 2.3mm. Maximum air temperature 10.8 c. Minimum 1.7c
20/3/17 This Bank holiday Monday was a wild day and going by my Waterville Fishery secret service, there were just 3 boats out and to be fair they did well to stay out there because there was some violent gusts from the NW with showers and a mixture of hailstones and last but not least they didn’t procure any Salmon. Wind NW fresh to strong, amount of rainfall yesterday 1.2mm. Maximum air temperature 12.9c. Minimum 10.7 c.

21/3/17 Waterville Angler Mr. Liam Ellis takes all the headlines in the Salmon department, while trolling caught a lightening fresh 9 lbs. salmon on the troll and for the other 3 boats they watched with envy as their day drew a blank. Now to the weather and it was cold out there today with a light NW and overcast with showers and as you can see by the picture there is snow on the mountain. Amount of rainfall yesterday 7.0 mm. Maximum air temperature 11.2c. Minimum 3.5c. Just for the record Local Gillie Mr. Tom O’Shea of www.flyfishingatloughcurrane.com took the photo and as you can see he’s as good with the iPad as he is with the fly.
22/3/17 Back to the cold weather, as the majority of anglers decided to rest on their laurels and warm their feet beside the fire in the Bar, so what can you say about these so called anglers, simple fine day fishermen! As I say that, one boat did venture out and drew a blank but at least he was out there fighting the elements. Wind NE fresh to strong with wintery showers. Amount of rainfall yesterday 4.9mm. Maximum air temperature 7.6c. Minimum 2.2c
That is your ration from the last week on Lough Currane, from your Gillie and the Waterville Fishery, no spin no fly’s just facts.
