Sean Carty of Carty’s Land and Sea Sports in Bundoran, Co. Donegal updates us on the fishing in the north of the country:
Fishing on the Erne estuary last week was excellent with good sport had by most anglers that ventured out in the Mediterranean type weather . The best results of the week seem to have been on lures and flies with anglers fishing the usual Sandeel method having only limited success . Last Thursday local angling guide James Cummins from www.northwestanglers.ie brought myself and two of the kids out for a few hours in the evening . We decided to stick with the fly fishing and from the time that we left the mall quay till we returned we had non stop action . Between myself and the kids we had over a dozen trout up to about 2.25lb .

The catch of the day had to be the 3.5lb mullet that my son Johnny caught ” unbelieveably “on a Gadget fly . A memory that I’m sure he will never forget ! The Sea fishing this week has also been very good with all the charter boats reporting excellent days out with great numbers of fish including some really good Pollock , Cod , Ling , and coalies . There are still great shoals of Mackerel in the bay and the big late evening tides that are due will give the perfect conditions to have a go at catching one or one hundred of them . The Salmon fishing last week was very slow . Between the bright warm conditions , the low water levels and the high water temperatures every thing is going against the salmon angler .
