IRELAND is the “Best Holiday Destination” according to today’s Angling Times readers. Over 52 per cent readers of Britain’s best “weekly” angling papers voted in favour of Ireland and beat places like Holland, Thailand, Spain and Canada.

That’s the story that will appear in AT today (Wednesday) certainly reflects the outstanding sport available, particularly when it comes to catching coarse fish and pike.

As far back as 1944 there were groups of anglers making their way to Ireland during spring – avoiding the UK coarse close season from March 16-June 16 – fishing for bream, tench, roach, perch and pike. The boom time was in the late 1960s when the man in the street found buying a car was becoming affordable and he could escape to Ireland where the fishing is free and licences are not needed (even to this day).

By the end of 70s, angling in Ireland was so popular that to guarantee a space on the ferry and somewhere to stay, it was absolutely necessary to have everything booked before Christmas!

Ireland has moved on with a vast selection of quality guesthouse, pubs with accommodation, hotels and super self-catering cottages dotted across the country. Today there are eight routes with a modern fleet of ferries that can cross the Irish Sea in as little as two hours. Fish stocks have never been so prolific and lively sport is guaranteed throughout the year.

Come to Ireland in 2013 and see for yourself.
