Stephen Brennan of IrishSportFishing.com had a great day on the Munster Blackwater at Blackwater Lodge at the weekend. His trip coincided nicely with the river coming into good order with a nice run and excellent clarity.

Stephen was fishing with his friend John just downstream of Kilavullen. Using a size 14 claret shrimp on a floating line with an intermediate tip John had the first fish of the day, a 5lb grilse. Later in the afternnon Stephen had his first of the day from the exact same spot.

Stpehen had the next one. This grilse tore off up upstream for about 100 yards before being brought under control and landed

Although the day was bright and sunny the there seemed to be plenty of fish about and Stephen had another as the light began to fade.

The last fish of the day came later in the evening

Over the weekend Ian Powell of Blackwater Lodge reported 19 salmon landed on Saturday, 7 on Sunday and a huge 17.2lb fish on Monday morning…

Yesterday (4th.) 80 years young Ken Tucker from Carlow landed this fine 17.2lb fish on Kents all on his own - some achievement.

Ian says that “the prospects for the next week are excellent. As the river drops fish should settle & come on the take. There is a huge head of fish in the upper river, & there have been a number of double figure fish caught on the lower river which were obviously residents & not just running through.”
