Bernard Devenney of the Dundalk and District Salmon Anglers reports that as expected, the autumn grilse run has finally arrived into the River Fane during the last week. Since Bernard’s last report, the fishing has really improved and with water conditions in excellent condition there is a good run of salmon starting the come into the river from the sea and anglers are starting to catch more fish. Raymond Connolly from Blackrock had a lovely 8lb salmon during the week and Michael McKenny from Ardee also had a lovely 7lb fish. Other anglers who were successful were Ken Coleman and Morris Mathews who had two fresh grilse from the River and Kevin Walsh also had a lovely 7lb fresh run grilse. Driven by the current improvement in the fishing, anglers expectations are now even higher that the fishing should improve further during the next week or two as September is always the best month on the River Fane. Bernard says that water conditions are currently in excellent condition for the fly and anglers should certainly have a go now that conditions are right. Dundalk Salmon Anglers Association will be holding their Annual Salmon Competitions this coming weekend and this should be a good indication of how good the run is. The Association offers day permits to fish their waters and these are available from the three fishing tackle shops in Dundalk or from Bernard Devenney @ 087 1322873 price €15 per day.
