Carton House fishery report 20/09/12

Fishery Manager, Rob Love reports on fishing at the Carton House Fisheries near Maynooth

A brace of nice trout in the River Rye in Carton Estate. The Rye Water

The Rye Water is now running quite low and could do with a days heavy rain to bring it up to more fishable levels as given the water clarity and low water levels fish have become distinctly spooky.  Having said that it is still possible to enjoy some good sport in the late afternoon and early evening.

Usual flies to try include Hares ear and Pheasant tail nymphs with CDC Olives also worth consideration.

The ideal rod for fishing the river in its current condition would be a 4 or at the most 5 weight.

The Sheet Water

The Sheet Water (our stocked lake) has been fishing well over the last number of weeks with trout (both rainbows and browns) up to 4lb being caught.

Successful flies include Goldheads, buzzers, blobs and fry imitations.

This is more suited to the beginner /  improver rather than the Rye Water and a heavier weighted line is tolerated by the fish.

The front lake

This water has not been fished heavily over the last few weeks.  There is both Pike and Trout fishing available.  I have even been informed from a very reliable source that there was a pike of 20lb+ spotted in the last week on this stretch of water.

As the season draws to a close we are offering half price tickets for fishing on the estate.  This includes private estate fishing on the Rye Water, the Sheet Water and on the front lake.

The normal price for a 6 hour ticket is €50, now reduced to €25.

Catch and release must be practiced.
