Fishery manager Brian Curran reports from Costello & Fermoyle, where a slow start to the season was followed by some good sport over the past 2 weeks.

From a slow start to the run of salmon, it was early June before we saw a number of salmon making their way up the system helped by good water levels and reasonable water temperatures.
Geoffrey Fitzjohn had the first touch of a salmon on the 1st June and lost another on the 12th June.
The next day saw the fishery manager, Brian Curran get us out of the blocks with a fresh 41/2lb grilse on a size 10 Black Shrimp.

Fish On The Move

In recent days , with high tides and plenty of water, we are seeing more salmon and the start of the sea trout run into the system.
Local angler Martin Griffin moved 2 salmon on 16th June while Sean Bollustrim and Thomas Naughton – fishing in bright sunshine and slack winds – had 2 fresh sea                trout with Thomas losing a substantial sea trout at the weekend on Glenicmurrin.
Given the weather outlook for the coming week, it is likely the river will be closed when temperatures reach 18-20 degrees. Bright sunshine does not make for good angling so we hope to see a return to more normal temperatures and some rain to bring levels up again
