So, we took a break there for a few weeks. We were just busy in the shop and also getting some work done around the house. We’re back now and we hope you are all getting out to do a bit of fishing.
How’s the Fishing
Leinster TAFI Rivers Championship
TAFI Leinster Senior & Master River Championships yesterday on the Mighty River Nore hosted by the Thomastown Anglers Association. We had 20 anglers compete and all qualify. Conditions started off promising, but rain in the upper system from the day before slowly but surely made it’s way down to the lower system causing the river to become coloured, rise and pressure. Having the inevitable effect of putting the fish down and turning them off. But still the anglers wrestled some hard fighting browns trout out. With 191 measurable fish recorded for the day.

A big thank you to the Thomastown Anglers Association for the use of the amazing water that the club has to offer. It’s always worth a trip to fish. To Quirke Trophies for the amazing crystal trophies for the competition, specially at last minute request – Thank you. To Piscari-Fly for giving sponsorship towards lots of prizes which went to all the winners. To the Salmon Pool Bar for the food & refreshments after a long day on the river. Plenty of room for everyone to enjoy the prize giving. To Frank Dempsey for all his help on the day, taking amazing photos, as well as helping with the scoring whilst organisers were also fishing.
Thank you also to Mark & Peter Driver for marking and mapping the beats the day before. A big thank you to Mark for organising the event for everyone. It went off without any issues. To all the Anglers competing:- well done to you all on a tricky tough day considering the conditions. Just a quick reminder that the Inter-pro rivers is on the last weekend of August. Finally congratulations to all the winners in Both Senior & Master Categories.
International River Championships in Scotland 2026

Congratulations to the Irish team winning gold in the International Rivers Championship. The team members were Andrew Sloan, Mark Sloan, Brian Larkin, Ciaran Reilly, Phil Poots and David May. A big congratulations must go to Ciaran Reilly lifting the Brown Bowl for a 2nd year in a row.
Fishing in Iceland
We had a cracking few days in May in Iceland chasing char mainly but also found some seatrout. What an amazing location to enjoy incredible fishing in great company over the few days. It’s definitely a spot worth revisting!
We fished the River Sogio up near Selfoss, it was a very wide river and the beats we fished were very wadable. The water tempature was very cold and a few layers of socks were neeeded for sure. While we did some streamer fishing, it was the nymphs that produced the best fishing over the four days. The hot tag duracell size 16 with a 3mm bead was our best pattern along with some other local patterns also picking up some fish over the trip.
We hope to be heading back next May for a trip with a group and really looking forward to it.

Hot Weather

Handling fish safely in high temperatures requires prioritizing their oxygen intake and minimizing their time out of the water.
Keep your hands wet when handling fish, and avoid handling them unless it’s absolutely necessary. Warm water conditions can cause significant stress, so treat fish with care and return them to the water as quickly as possible. Proper handling helps improve their chances of recovery and survival.
