Chris McCully gives us a run down on the effective flies used in sea trout fishing. The Dry Daddies he tells us are particularly effective on freshwater when natural daddies are around in August and September. Chris prefers to skim the Daddy along the surface, delicately and subtlety.
The Watson’s Fancy is one of his most successful freshwater patterns. With it’s combination of colours the pattern stands out well laterally (as the fish might see it) or in silhouette. Small doubles are great to use at night on the river. Chris prefers combinations of blue/black/silver and black/yellow/silver. The usual idea is to swing the fly across the noses of resting sea-trout a foot or two down on an intermediate line.
The Blue and Silver Teal is a wonderful getter of sea-trout and works particularly well on fresh-run (or estuary) fish. It is highly rated by the Irish, Scottish and the Welsh and rightly so.
