THE recent announcement by BIM’s Chief Executive, Jason Whooley, which suggests the establishment of a series of off-shore salmon farms around Ireland’s coast in order to boost the marine economy, has met with considerable opposition from the likes of Inland Fisheries Ireland, environmental groups, fishermen, tourism and angling organisations.  According to one such group, Save Bantry Bay, the scale of the farm proposed for Galway Bay alone would double Ireland’s output of farmed salmon, “yet, shockingly, no Strategic Environmental Assessment has been completed to determine what the impact of such a policy may be, despite this being required by EU legislation…
