The John Enright Festival will take place as part of ‘the Gathering’ Ireland Programme on 10th-13th of October 2013 in the scenic village of Castleconnell on the banks of the majestic River Shannon. John Enright was an exceptionally talented Castleconnell man whose exploits as a fly caster were world famous during the late 1800’s and early 1900’s. From these Isles to New York’s Central Park, the Enright name was synonymous with world class fly-casting, fly rods and fly reels. In 1896 John Enright became the Fly-Casting Champion of the World at Wimbledon Park Lake in England for Distance Casting. He also won First Prize in all five events on that famous day. From 1890 to 1905 his success rate in International Fly-Casting Competitions was phenomenal. His Exploits on the world stage brought fame and glory to himself and his native village of Castleconnell. The Castleconnell Fishery was already an Internationally renowned Salmon Angling Centre.
John accomplished being World Champion three times in total and is still to this day a world fly-casting record holder. His record of five wins in 5 different events still stands today. His World Record distance of 186 feet achieved with a 20 foot Castleconnell Rod also stands today. On 10th-13th of October 2013 some of the world’s best Fly Casters currently, Fly Angling Enthusiasts and Tourists will be present in the village of Castleconnell, joining the local community in a celebratory festival to play homage to the past exploits of this one time exceptionally talent man.
