T

he inaugural Daingean Sundew Festival Match took place over the weekend of 13/14 June, with anglers enjoying some excellent sport in the Daingean area. Bonus fish played a major role in the leading weights, with bream and tench featuring strongly. Roach were also present, though still somewhat inconsistent, most likely due to spawning activity or having only recently finished.

Local angler Davy Cullen of M&D Match Anglers claimed first place with an impressive 27lb 6oz, made up mainly of quality bream along with a tench. Davy also lost eight fish in the weed, which may have cost him a chance of setting a new record weight for the stretch. Even so, he had plenty to celebrate, taking home the new Sundew Trophy, a hamper, and prize money. Tommy Burke of Edenderry CAC finished second with 12lb 6oz, helped by half a dozen skimmers added to a good net of roach, while Alan Larkin took third with 10lb 3oz.

There was also junior success on the day, with Thomas Gilligan recording an outstanding 19lb 14oz to win the junior section.

The second match of the weekend was a club competition, again held in the Daingean area. Mixed catches dominated, with encouraging numbers of small skimmers showing among the resident roach. Alan Larkin took the win with 10lb 2oz, including a lone tench, followed by Joe Nolan on 9lb 14oz and Jimmy Kelly on 8lb 2oz.
