Angling Guide and journalist Mick Flanagan reports on some festive pike fishing on the midland loughs near Mullingar, in Co. Westmeath.
HOOKED ON MIDLAND LAKES.I had a cracking day at the pike with Hooked Live Show Director Mark Ryan of Kilcock over the Christmas Break. We had planned a few days but the high winds made it impossible to get out on the lakes. Eventually we did get he boat launched, and had 10 pike on a variety of lures. Mark managed to land our best fish on a Orange and Yellow soft lure, which has worked well over the winter months in colored waters. Keep this in mind, as our lakes and rivers are rising and some are very colored with all the fresh floods.
SPECIMEN HUNTERS CAUGHT ON CAMERA. Some of Irelands top Pike Anglers were drifting across Westmeath over the Christmas break, and banked some huge pike. Some of the lads have appeared in Angling Focus before, and the day I met up with them Ger Bradley of Dublin produced a few super pike up on 19lbs. Ally Curry was also on fire, and we photographed Ally with Rochfortbridge Angler Alex Nickelson.
The lads were fishing with the 2012 Waterways Ireland Erne Open Pike Champion Sean O, Brien of Wicklow, and Tipperary Hurler Bonner Maher. Its great to see such top class pike Anglers, checking out the lakes and rivers across Westmeath.
GLORE ANGLERS. Last Sunday December 30th Lough Glore Anglers had hoped to hold a pike competition, but “Johnny Wind” was blowing a gale and the competition was cancelled for safety reasons. It was decided to relocate to a stretch of the River Inny and try out luck for a few hours, but unfortunally the wind and rain got the better of us, and the competition will be fished early in 2013.
