Fishing had been comparatively quiet at Blackwater Lodge since mid-May even though there were reports of a fair number of fish running the river. Last week conditions looked very difficult with a heatwave hitting Southern Ireland. Not a cloud in the sky and blazing sunshine every day. But we can never predict the behaviour of the salmon!

We kicked off with a six pounder Sunday 02 June, a 9 pounder on Tuesday, three grilse to one rod on spinner on Thursday, another grilse on Friday and then topped it all on Saturday with six fish to 11.5lb. (including fish of 10.7 & 8.5lb) – and all this with air temperatures soaring to 25ºC in the shade at 17.00 in the evening!

Eleven fish for the week in such challenging conditions was a remarkable feat for just 53 rod days.

Prospects

There are quite good runs of both grilse and large salmon coming into the river off every tide in the last few days.
The prospects for the coming week are looking superb as we have broken weather for the week!
