Shane Gallagher from the Drowes reports
27 March: There were ideal surfing conditions on Lough Melvin over the weekend with up to 2 foot waves. Great for surfing, not so great for fishing, especially for casting a fly!
Strong bitterly cold east wind persisted from Thursday to yesterday evening. Despite difficult conditions there were a number of fish reported.
On Thursday P. Mc Causland had a 7.5lbs fish on flying c from the Red Roof. On Friday C. Mc Govern had a 5lbs fish on worm from the Upper Mill.
On Saturday Brian Mc Evoy released a fish estimated at 5lbs from the Island Pool and another of about 10lbs from the Cascades, both on devon minnow.
On Sunday J. Doyle had a 10lbs fish on spinner from Peter’s Reeds and T. Parker released a fish of about 10lbs from the Meadow and released another similar fish from the Meadow yesterday, both on a tadpole spinner.
Today (27/03) B. Likely had a 10lbs fish on Rapalla from the Sand Hole and D. O’Toole had a 12lbs fish on a self tied Tunney Boy from the Grazings.
After a small rise water levels have dropped again to just below 0.5 metres. Water temperature remains low at under 5c. The forecast is for cold but mainly dry weather for the Easter weekend.
