Ghille Vincent Appleby reports from his blog on Lough Currane:
04/10/2013: Straight to my Noble Sea Trout, first in the striking zone were Mr. Michael Jones and Mr. Morris Willis, with 6 Sea Trout from juniors up to 3 ½ lbs and Michael was also telling me that they caught a good basket of Brown Trout and just for the record they were fishing out of the Bog. Also in good form was Mr. Roger McCogan, fishing with his gillie Mr. Dominic McGillicuddy of www.fishingwithdom.com caught 5 Sea Trout from Juniors up to 3 lbs. Wind NW light to fresh with light showers at times.
05/10/2013: There were not many boats out manipulating their flies so my Noble Anglers boats were bear as were their baskets, but at least one boat kept the Lough Currane flag flying high, and that was Mr. Liam McKnight fishing with his Gillie Mr. Neil O’Shea of www.oshealoughcurrane.com with 2 Sea Trout of which the best weighed in at 2 lbs. Their was one more boat out there but alas they obviously caught nothing and they certainly failed miserably to report their catches or the lack of them. Now for the rest of the news there isn’t any, because the majority of anglers were too lazy to get out there and I have to admit I am the most guilty.
06/10/2013: There was reasonable action in the Sea Trout and Salmon departments and here are the returns. Mr. Liam Ellis of Waterville gets C&R of the day with a fine Salmon in the 7 lbs class. Now to the hired out boat department of www.lakelandshouse.com Mr. John Flaherty caught 11 Sea Trout all in the 1 ½ lbs class also on good form in the same hired out boat department, was Mr. Michael Heery and Denis Murphy with 11 Sea Trout to their boat, again all in the 1 ½ lbs class. Now we cut across to the Bungalow on the North side. Mr. Mr. Liam McKnight fishing with his Gillie Mr. Neil O’Shea of www.oshealoughcurrane.com caught 2 Trout to his rod. Staying at the Bungalow, Mr. Ger McCarthy, fishing with his Gillie Mr. Tom O’Shea of www.flyfishingatloughcurrane.com caught 2 Juniors to his rod. Now we head down the shoreline to the hired out boat department of Waterville Boats and at [email protected] Mr. Ger O’Connor caught 4 Sea Trout up to 1 ½ lbs. and just for the record Mr. Michael O’Sullivan was telling some more facts on the phone but alas the phone signal broke down so will give more facts on Michael’s Hired out boat department tomorrow.
07/10/2013: Lough Currane was on the wild side, and there were no reports of any real road benders. So we will head down stream to the famous Butler Pool and www.watervillegolflinks.ie and a guest fishing with his Gillie Mr. Michael O’Sullivan of Waterville Boats and at [email protected] caught a 7 lbs. salmon on the fly. Now to the backdate department yesterday 6/10/13 Mr. Niall Sayers and his good friend Mr. Richard Amy, caught 3 Juniors and finished their day off with a fine clipped Grilse, i.e. a hatchery fish.
08/10/2013: All quiet on the SW front. Wind NW light with reasonable cloud cover.
09/10/2013: The same results as yesterday. So we will head for the backdate Sea Trout department of the 6/10/13 and in the words of Mr. Paul Hyland, Vincent, apologies for late picture and report. Picture is not great either. Choppy lake and in a tight spot!
Dropped phone in sump of boat. Been doing odd things ever since. Got the attached fish on Sunday late in the evening – i think it’s a good 5lb. Did well enough over four days prior to that. Best fishing all year.
10/10/2013: There was some reasonable fishing on Lough Currane, and here are the Sea Trout results for the Waterville fishery. We will go straight to the Franks Hired out boat department and of www.lakelandshouse.com Mr. John Holsters caught 9 Sea Trout up to 1 ½ lbs to his rod also in good form was Mr. Phil Cronin caught 6 Sea Trout in the Junior class and yesterday 9/10/13 Phil also caught 6 Juniors. Staying in Franks hired out boats, John and Vivian McKeckney, caught 2 Juniors to their boat. Now we cut across the the Lake to the north side and the Gillie Department, Phil and Tara Staniforth, fishing with their Gillie Mr. Dominic McGillicuddy of www.fishingwithdom.com caught 4 Sea Trout up to 2 lbs. Now we go upstream to the upper Lakes and Lough Namona, Mr. Ray Burns, while fishing with his Gillie Mr. Neil O’Shea of www.oshealoughcurrane.com caught 2 Trout.
No Spin No Fly’s just facts.
