Vincent Appleby reports from Lough Currane during this heatwave:
05/07/2013: Straight to the cock-up department, yes you have it, I got the facts wrong on Mr. John Murphy’s Degree, I stated that John had a degree in Marine Biology, when in fact he has a degree in wildlife Biology, sorry for that John, but as they say a man who never made a mistake never made anything. Now to the salmon department, Mr. Dave Cronin, fishing in hired out boat from www.lakelandshouse.com caught a fine 4 ½ lbs. Grilse and in the past 2 days, Dave has caught 3 Sea Trout up to 2 ½ lbs. Also in good form in the Salmon department was Mr. Bill Doone of the USA, who caught a fine Grilse on the troll, while fishing with his Gillie Mr. Frank Donnelly of www.Lakelandshouse.com
Staying in the Salmon department Mr. Christy McGuckin, fishing with his Gillie Mr. Dominic McGillicuddy of www.fishingwithdom.com caught a 5 lbs Grilse on the troll and also caught 2 Sea Trout which were returned. Now to the Sea Trout department and catch of the day goes to Mrs. Rose Herne, who caught a fine 2 lbs Sea Trout on the fly while fishing with here Brother Mr. Liam Ellis. Staying in the Sea Trout department Mr. Michael Wright, fishing with his Gillie Mr. Neil O’Shea of www.oshealoughcurrane.com caught 1 Sea Trout on the fly. In the Sea Trout trolling C&R department Local Gillie Mr. Vincent Appleby of www.salmonandseatrout.com caught 2 Sea Trout both in the 1 ¾ lbs. class. Now we go upstream and to Lough Derriana, Mr. Steven Quin of Northern Ireland, fly fishing with his Gillie Mr. Tom O’Shea of www.flyfishingatloughcurrane.com caught 3 Brown Trout, ranging from 1 lbs up to 1 ½ lbs. and finished their day off with a fine Sea Trout in the 3 lbs. Class. Wind calm this morning but come lunchtime the wind came from the SW light to fresh with reasonable cloud cover at times.
06/07/2013: Mr. Gerry O’Sullivan of Cork and Waterville, caught a 4 lbs. Grilse on the troll and Gerry was telling me that he lost two Grilse. Now to the Sea Trout, Mr. Michael Wright of the UK, caught 2 Sea Trout, while fishing with his Gillie Mr. Neil O’Shea of www.oshealoughcurrane.com Now for catch of the day and that goes to Mr. Ken Towner of the UK and Waterville, Ken caught a fine 5 ½ lbs Sea Trout on the fly. I will finish today’s notes on a personal note, because of the Radio Kerry Charity cycle race I didn’t go fishing, so instead I took 800 photos at the top of Coomakista and one charitable cyclist made it quite clear what he thought of my reporting and photography, Wind SW light and overcast all day.
07/07/2013: All the headlines go to Mr. john Baller and his son Richard of the UK, fishing out of www.butlerarms.com caught a fine Grilse on the troll, while fishing with their Gillie Mr. Neil O’Shea of www.oshealoughcurrane.com and for the rest of the angling community they failed miserably in their duties, but to be fair to my noble anglers, there was bright sunshine all day and very warm. Just for the record the photo was taken by Mr. Neil O’Shea of www.oshealoughcurrane.com
08/07/2013: The sun was beaming down on Lough Currane today with little to no wind until this afternoon, which came from the West and light, even though the conditions were totally against my Noble Anglers, Mr. Andy Wishart, of Co Down, caught a fine Grilse on the Troll, with his Gillie, the one and only Mr. Dominic McGillicuddy of www.fishingwithdom.com
09/07/2013: Why go to Hawaii for a sun tan when you can come Waterville Co Kerry, because that is all the majority of anglers caught on Lough Currane, even though one guest did catch 1 Sea Trout, while fishing with his Gillie Mr. Neil O’Shea of www.oshealoughcurrane.com so I will go to quote of the day and that comes from Mr. Liam Ellis Esq. renowned specimen Sea Trout hunter, I text Liam if he had caught anything and he text me back and I quote, Only mad dogs and Englishmen fish in the midday sun, all I can say is, thank god I have some Irish Blood in me.
On that note we head upstream to Lough Namona, Mr. Denis Dennehy and Mr. Tim Durham of Westmeath, had some good action in the Brown Trout department and finished their day off with a fine Sea Trout, just over the 5 lbs. Weather the same as yesterday and the max air temperature was 24.7c.
10/07/2013: Here is your weather report for today, blazing sunshine with very little wind in the morning, come afternoon there was a gentle breeze from the west. On the wild game fish front, I will stick to yesterdays quote, need I say more. Just for the record yesterdays temperature reached 27.6c.
11/07/2013: There was more cloud cover today, but still very warm, even though there was a nice westerly blowing down the lake, but still my noble Anglers failed in all departments. Yesterdays air temperature was 23.7c.
