From his blog at ghillie Vincent Appleby reports on fishing trends from Lough Currane.

7/3/13 My Noble Salmon was in a  lethargic mood and my noble anglers were just as bad, here endeth today’s lesson, wind ESE fresh and overcast with light drizzle.

8/3/13 Again my noble Anglers failed miserably in their duties in procuring my Noble Salmon be it on fly or troll. Amount of rainfall yesterday, 7.4 mm.

9/3/13 Straight to the action, the first 12lbs Salmon was caught on the fly, on the Waterville Fishery by that renowned Fly Fisherman Mr. Kevin Shea of Been Bane Waterville, and just for the record, Kevin’s late Father, MR. Jack Shea also of Been Bane, was one of Waterville’s great fly fisherman and  Gillie, and was also a Fishery Officer on the Waterville Fishery in the fifties and Sixties. Now for the rest of the fishing news on the Waterville Fishery, in the professional Gillie’s department, the least said the soonest mended, wind ESE fresh and overcast.

10/3/13 Lough Currane was on the cold side, with a fresh Easterly wind blowing up the Lake, and my Noble anglers failed miserably in all departments be it fly or troll.

11/3/13 A Freezing cold day, and very few boats ventured out, and the ones that did Failed in all departments. Wind NE fresh with snow showers, now to the news from

The boats on the Upper Lakes here are now deployed for the 2013 season! There are two boats available on Lough Derriana and one each on Loughs Cloonaghlin and Na Mona. This year we are hoping to also gain access for a boat on Lough Na Huisce. Watch this space!

These Upper Lakes have been much underrated as brown trout fisheries in the past, particularly as the excellent duck fly hatches produce great sport with good quality brown trout in the spring.

This year we are offering special rates for fly fishing for brown trout to members of the Waterville Fisheries Development Group. Fly fishing only,  on Derriana, Na Mona and Cloonaghlin, will cost just €25 a day until the 30th April 2013! Be sure to show your membership card when booking at the Londis Store in Waterville to avail of this special  ‘Duck Fly Deal’!!

12/3/13 Just a few boats out, and no rod benders, wind NNE light with bright sunshine and just for the record the maximum air temperature yesterday was 2.9 C and if you take the wind chill into account it felt even colder.

13/3/13 All quiet on the SW front in all departments.

That is your ration for this week, from your Gillie/Guide and the Waterville fishery.

No Spin No Fly’s just facts.
