Billy Downes reports that Opening Day of 2013 was  beautiful on the Laune.  The water level was at a lovely 3.5 feet on the gauge at  Johnston’s and Billy Cotter reported that conditions were perfect for fishing.  This was verified by Michael Bowe member from Cork who fished with Sean Oakes at Crowley’s.  Michael said that the mild weather made it feel good especially having the grub on the river bank.  As well as having pleasant fishing conditions and shaking off the cabin fever Michael released a very red cock salmon of about 7 lbs which he caught on an orange tube fly.  This fly also accounted for a 10 inch trout.

There has been no more news of fish or fishing for the past few days.  River is very high and no weather for a picnic!!!

Conditions were similar at Beat 3. There was some fishing done on the Beat on Opening day and a few spents were caught on the fly.   Beat 3 might be the best place to try for a fish during the next few weeks especially during January/February as good high water suits the Beat.

Beat 1

Paul Hanely fished Beat 1 over the weekend. He found the fishery to be very quiet and the water level to be high. Paul fished a Cascade Variant, Paul’s Favourite and a Yukanga Gold. using a 13′ double hander and a shooting head floating line he used two different sink tips during the day, a green tip ( 2.6 inches ps ) and a brown tip ( 3.9 inches ps ), both  10 ft in length to cover different water depths.

The Laune at Beat 1 is very up and down in depth with shallow gravel areas and loads of deep pockets and using different sink tips helps to cover most of the water because at this time of year you have to go down to the fish, they are not going to come up after a fly.

Paul has a great salmon fishing blog at salmonfishingireland2012.blogspot.ie which includes videos of many of the most popular Irish fisheries as well as regular reports on conditions and methods.
