Nigel Rush reports on the last few days of August on the Kylemore Fishery and prospects for this month…
Week ending 31st August allowed for just 12 Salmon for 23.5 rod days. Reasonable water levels last Sunday saw regular anglers Geoffrey Fitzjohn and Seamus O’Neil land seven fish between them for the day. Levels from thereon dropped and with the balmy weather conditions nothing else was landed until Saturday when first time angler to Kylemore Paul Mason landed two fish from the Upper Lake and Seamus O’Neil a further three fish to 6lb from the river.
With the last day of the month falling on a Saturday calculations for the month of August show that 88 Salmon/Grilse were accounted for and 91 Sea Trout for 112 rod days. This leaves us with 189 salmon for the season so far just 11 more for the magical 200!
Regular anglers Neil Spellacy and Kevin Crowley hit the lakes yesterday for a day’s Sea Trout angling which accounted for 10 trout to 1.5 lb. It was possibly the first day of the season that you could see that fishing would have to be good on the lakes with good constant cool westerlies. Whilst landing a small sea trout, Kevin’s rod bent double and the reel was sent screaming… a ferox trout of about 5lb had latched on to the sea trout and was not going to let it go. Nearly to the net, the fish thought better of capture and released the trout seeming unharmed by its ordeal.
Fish are still entering the river. Last Tuesday at least ten salmon were clearly visible at Derryinver Bridge one of which was lost after a short tussle.
Four week left… make the most of it!

Hidden away between the mountains of Connemara and the Atlantic ocean, the Kylemore Abbey fishery is a wild and beautiful place. Kylemore Abbey Fishery consists of the Kylemore Middle and Castle lakes, with five and a half miles of the Dawros river which enters the sea in Ballynakill bay. Salmon and sea-trout run for a good proportion of the year to provide first class fishing on uncrowded waters.
The open panoramas of the lakes contrast with the intimacy of the river to give a variety of fishing combined with stunning scenery unrivalled anywhere in Ireland. Although offering an excellent chance of a fish for most of the season, you will find the real meaning of “a fish is a bonus” at Kylemore.
