Billy Downes of the Laune Salmon and Trout Anglers Association reports on how the Laune fished over the weekend…
02/09 As of Monday 2nd September Laune now well under one foot on the gauge at Johnston’s and in need of water. Looking at the weather forecast there is no comfort there for the foreseeable future.
There are a few fish being caught each day but most anglers are finding it frustratingly difficult to meet a fish. Having waited for months for the commercial nets to finish anglers were hopeful that August and September would see them at least meeting fish in some numbers, it has not happened so far. That said we are badly in need of rain and a rise of two feet to get a few days good fishing.
Most anglers are of the view that there are fish there but water conditions are not right. Others are saying that fish are scarce and that is the reason for poor catches, we will see who is correct if we get water.
Some success is being had with worm and small trout flies to which grilse seem to be susceptible.
Beat 3:
Water on Beat 3 is now very low and prospects there require a two foot rise of water from the County Bounds. Trout fishing on the Beat could be very good.
Beats 1 and 2:
1 salmon weighing 8lbs landed on a worm on Beat 2 by a County Offaly angler.
Prospects:
We need rain for any good fishing prospects but there is still some chance if you get out.
