Owenea Fishery report from Lindsey Clarke
The mini heat wave ended on Monday and the week brought rainfall and overcast days. This gave some lovely water levels in the river. The river was very low until heavy rain on Tuesday night gave a good flood in the river on Wednesday (0.40 metres). The river then fell until we had a bigger flood on Saturday that read 0.55 metres. The gauge average for the week was much healthier reading 0.24 metres.
The fishery was busier with 23 visiting rods fishing for the week. Allied to an increasing run of salmon, this all meant that the fishing picked up and there was some 16 salmon caught for the week.
On Wednesday, Dietrich Bonhorst recorded a 10½lb salmon caught on a fly from beat 7. Ray Robinson logged a 10½lb salmon also caught on a fly from beat 7. Young Thomas Whelan caught a 5lb grilse on a spinner from beat 9 and John Lennon accounted for an 8lb & an 11lb salmon caught on a fly from beat 5 losing another fish.
On Saturday, Alan Mooney recorded an 8lb salmon caught on a fly from beat 6. Adrian Whelan accounted for a 10lb salmon caught from beat 8. John Joe Doherty landed a 4lb grilse and Peter Timothy registered a 6½lb grilse caught on a fly from beat 7 and hooked and lost a further fish.
On Sunday, Alan Watson logged a 9lb 1oz salmon caught on a fly from beat 7.
The forecast for the coming week is for a dry first half of the week with rain predicted for the latter half of the week. If we get a bit of water, prospects look good
