Owenea Fishery report from Lindsey Clarke…
We received decent rain last week and this lead to some nice water levels during the week. On Monday we had a good flood reading 0.41 metres. This gave nice water over Tuesday (0.26m) and Wednesday (0.24m). Thursday gave another good flood reading 0.38m. The water then fell away and the weekend gave lower levels. The river was not particularly busy however with 22 visiting rods in attendance. There were reasonable numbers of salmon caught during the good water but we would have expected more given the good water. This is no doubt a reflection of the poorer grilse run prevalent on nearly every fishery this year.
Given here are some of the catches from the catch register. On Monday, Dave Sullivan recorded a 6lb grilse caught on a spinner from beat 9 and I caught a lovely 14½lb salmon on a fly from beat 4 which was released again. On Tuesday, John Breslin logged a 3½lb grilse caught on a spinner from beat 6. Sean Campbell reported a 4lb grilse caught on a spinner from beat 3 and Jim McLean accounted for a 7lb salmon caught and released on a spinner from beat 8. On Wednesday, John Breslin recorded a 4lb grilse caught on a spinner from 5 and on the following day, a 10lb salmon caught from beat 6 on a spinner. At the time of writing the river is running at low levels once again (0.1m) and we are praying for rain some rain to give us a nice flood before the end of the season on Monday.
