Danny Wyse of West Cork and District SAC reports on yesterday’s 2nd Leg of the Munster Closed Shore Championship fished at Bantry…

The weather gods deserted us again for our leg of the Munsters. After a few weeks of decent summer weather yesterday’s match was fished out in 20 mph easterly winds and constant rain.

That is how it goes and anglers are prepared for the worst weather. The real problem yesterday was the WEED ! In zone C most anglers stopped fishing as it was simply impossible .

Zone A was fairly clean for the first couple of hours, zone B was just about fishable as well so lads in these areas got a few fish on the cards early, the best of these being a Bass in the 40’s to Alan Mulcahy and a flounder of 33cm to Jeff O’Donoghue . Gearoid McCarthy on peg 1 had 4 flounders early two of which were undersized and didn’t count. Other lads found the odd undersized fish as well, in-size fish were rare among the 27 anglers who turned out. Alan O’Dowling on the other end peg (33) had a flounder of 21cm to be leading the dreaded zone C around the halfway mark and he looked to be walking it at this point as nobody else had a trace in the water !

As the match went into the last couple of hours the weed spread more evenly along the beach giving everyone a good rod bend with battles being played out along the shoreline , I even saw a rod and reel dragged off the rod stand and into the water by the mighty Kelp!

Then in a moment of inspiration Derek Kenrick dug out a 2 hook clipped down baited it with mackeral + lug and sent it in the direction of America. Holding the rod high in the air he was able to avoid most of the weed in the first 100yards and give his trace enough time to catch a dogfish. Like sheep we all followed. In fact it cheered us up big-time in zone C as most of us managed to get dogs on the scorecard and I’m very glad to say it won Derek the match as he caught a seriously impressive 9 dogs in that last hour and a half . So much for fishing for flats and Bass on Inch Strand !
