Day 2 of the Fisheries Awareness Week events in the Drogheda area took place today Sunday 12th May at Port Beach, Clogherhead, Co Louth. Peter Cunningham and ten members of his team at the Boyne Sea Angling Club provided expert tuition on how to target species such as flounder, dabs, plaice and bass and showed everyone how they can enjoy and experience the sport of sea angling. After years of angler free beaches it was great to see Port Beach filled with anglers, tripods and beach casting rods and most importantly lots of spectators wanting to get involved in the sport of sea angling. Between 35 and forty adults and children took part in the Fisheries Awareness Week event and people travelled from Drogheda, Dundalk, Malahide and Northern Ireland. There were lots of fish caught and species included bass, flounder, plaice and dabs and even a few sea trout were caught. All fish were returned unharmed to the water. Those attending the event were shown how to set up their tackle, how to tie on rigs and traces and how to cast. Both bait fishing and spinning techniques were demonstrated and tips were provided on both methods of fishing. In addition to the practical fishing information on offer, advice was provided on how to stay safe while fishing with particular reference to tidal and weather conditions. Today’s event took place from 10am to 1pm at Port Beach in Clogherhead, Co Louth but many people stayed on after the event had officially finished. The club was also recruiting new members on the day and a number of people availed of this great opportunity to get involved in sea angling with a great club. Another event is planned for next week Sunday 19th May from 2pm to 5pm at the same location and it too is suitable for beginners, novices and improvers alike. All are welcome to join in. See you there!
