We had a small crew of 5 on Friday consisting of Antony Morris, Shane O Dea, Henry Kelly, Nial Burke and Jerry Dixon, (winner of the Wicklow Tope festival in August). This was mainly due to late notice of the trip, the weather was to be good so I put the feelers out on Thursday. After a day of fresh East and South-east wind on Thursday winds died overnight but we were pessimistic to be honest. We gave the mackerel a try first in close but to no avail , so we set off for a 45Metre deep mark. After a few strings of mackerel we went bottom fishing, and after no time BullHuss were showing, no tope yet but more BullHuss.
It took a while before the first Tope took, and Antony Morris was delighted to be the first, again ! A fine tope of 153cm length was landed, some time later another 1 tope was lost. Between the Tope we had 9 BullHuss up to 12lb weight, a few grey Gurnard, few dogs and loads of Mackerel. Small joey mackerel were plentiful in the deep water marks, used as bait it only tempted 2 Tope, were they well filled on Mackerel or was Thursday’s East and SE winds the factor – who knows ??.
