Josie Mahon had a specimen mullet in Wicklow last weekend fishing bread flake on the surface in a Wicklow estuary and reports that the mullet fishing is expected to slow down now with cooler weather. Also in fish catching mode was Chris McGregor who had a lovely North Wicklow bass, which was taken during the week in Northerly winds fishing crab bait very close to the shore. After a quick photo the bass was then released.

Flounders will start returning to our estuaries now, fresh crab bait is the best bait. Some anglers prefer a crab / lug cocktail using long snoods. Use a Gemini disgorger, flounders can be deeply hooked, sometimes without bite indication. The Gemini disgorger can be inserted slowly through the gill and out through the flounder’s mouth by placing the snood in the ring at the end of the disgorger. The snood can then be pulled back and out the gill. The angler can pull the snood gently and turn the hook, the hook can then be taken out through the gill. The hook can then be snipped off and the snood simply pulled back out through the mouth. This method will save a lot of flounders in the coming weeks, it is a cheap tool that most anglers should have in their kit.
