It’s all systems go at Inniscarra. Great preparations have provided great results and the scene is set for the 25 nations competing in the 4th FIPS-ed World Feeder Fishing Championships hosted by the National Coarse Fishing Federation of Ireland. The official opening will take place this evening with Mr Fergus O’Dowd TD, Minister of State at the Department of Communications, Energy & Natural Resources attending at the Aghabullogue GAA Complex after a ‘Parade of Nations’ through Coachford Village from 6pm. This is a great opportunity to show case Cork as an ideal place for angling and for the world to see what Ireland has to offer.
Salmon and trout anglers are optimistic this week as rain is forecasted. Their mid-night rain dances will soon pay off. Galway has already had a good few showers yesterday and Kylemore and Lough Inagh have reaped the benefits with the lakes full and plenty of fish in the system. So far this week the fishery has produced 11 grilse to 5lbs for just 13 rod-days. An excellent run of sea trout was also reported at Erriff. 849 sea trout were recorded passing through the counting facility at Aasleagh Falls between the 7th and the 13th!
The Munster Blackwater reported a lot more fish being caught this week and some lost. The Glenmore beat saw nice grilse up to 4lbs on the fly. Henry Anson and his two sons Oscar and Archie made the most of their break with both lads catching their first salmon. The Drowes is still on a go slow but coming rain should soon perk things up. It was the same story in Delphi with only 6 fish being reported for the week. Sean Dempsey was the exception however as he landed a sea liced fish of approx. 14lbs from the Turn pool on a Dempsey nymph and a 9lbs fish from Salmon City on Finlough on Jungle Bunny Bibio.
The Moy water levels were still low and this influenced angler’s ability to catch fish in good numbers. Further upriver, Jean Jacques Daurat from France did get a fine 12 lb. salmon. Carrowmore Lake boasted some excellent sea trout as did the Currane. Bob White of the UK ended a 60 year famine when he caught his first Currane salmon on the troll while out with Ghillie Michael O’Sullivan. What a great way to celebrate his 70th Birthday!
Lough Sheelin saw a few chilly nights and as the old saying goes ‘When the temperatures go down the fish come up ‘. Evening time saw great fishing with the sedge, green peter and murrough doing the business. Heaviest fish of the week was a 5½lb trout caught by Dundalk angler Peter McArdle using a sedge.
The Corrib saw the boys in blue descend for the Garda Annual Competition on July 10th. The trout were dazzled and shy but yet 20 anglers detained 12 fish. A nice bit of rain following that saw conditions improve. 6 anglers fishing the Oughterard area for 15 rod-days reported landing 66 trout and all methods worked well.
After the hard tropical weather experienced by Lough Mask and Carra it’s good to see things pick up. Sedge fishing has improved in the late evening. Ballinrobe angler Richie Cameron had a lovely 4lbs trout on a dry sedge in the shallows over the weekend.
Lough Conn came up trumps for Peter Roche from Co. Mayo where he caught a superb 6.25 lbs. Lough Conn brownie on a Green Peter Dabbler. A super fish. Peter was fishing in the Cormorant Rocks area.
Despite difficult conditions Ballybay Angling IFI 2 Day Match saw some good bags of fish being taken. U.K. based angler Mick Smith caught over 40kgs on the first day and Irish based Peter Walsh had a bag of just over 20kg on day two.
Congratulations and well done to our Irish Team who had great success in the Tronixpro Home International Shore Championships 2014 Scotland. The Senior Mens, Ladies and Under 16’s teams all won Gold, while the Under 21’s Youth team took fourth place.
The big boys hit Wicklow with Kit Dunne’s customers enjoying the spoils. David Bailey’s day went from good to great when he ventured out with Kit as he caught a superb 37lb (16.78kg) Tope. While down in Kerry, Ullcatch’s Eugene Farrelly landed a tope which had been originally tagged in 2006. This 34.83lb (15.8kg) fish was first tagged SW of Little Samphire island in Kerry and loved the area so much he decided to stick around.

Guide Richie Ryan was at the start of the bass tagging programme in Cork Harbour this week. He tells us things are looking good and a number of fine conditioned bass have been caught. Well known angler Jim Clohessy caught the cream of the crop on the day with a cracking 78cm/10.6lb bass. This excellent fish is our ‘Catch of the Week’ winner. This fish is now back swimming with a transmitter fitted as well as an ID tag. Scale samples were taken which will determine the exact age as well as genetic samples. If you wish to take part in this programme, details are available ‘here
It’s good to see the mackerel have made their way to Red Bay and Hamish Currie is back out in search of predators. His catch this week saw big female spurs and a number of smaller topes.
Swords Angling Club member Ruairi Coleman also reports a lot of mackerel about which makes the fishing easier and he chalked up quite a few species including smoothies, small tope, small bass, dogs, whiting, flounder and a few nice sized codling.
Kinsale skipper Michael Dennehy has plenty of sharks about as well as some good cod and reef fish on light tackle.
All in all a good week with more to come. So take care, tight lines and remember a life jacket will float, you won’t so wear it.

Tight lines especially here in Ireland,

Nancy Hearne
